Inheritance of Ache

shore aches —
sand clings
to trembling feet,

safety tastes
of salt.

hold aches —
the hand I trusted
quivers,

grief drips
between fingers.

our ache —
we carry it
like lanterns,

faint light
against dark.

Summer’s exit marked

By gusts from a back door slammed

With red and orange tears.

After I was put to bed, my parents would lapse into the old language and I would hear its rhythm up the hallway, knowing all was right with my parents and therefore the world.

How much in those early days did they speak of struggle? A word floats into my mind - nanni - thank you.

Sweat beads. The heat even seems to come through each ceiling fan's rickety rotation. Uneasy half-waking slumber. I walk my dreamscape unerringly, navigating easily through this high-walled city state. In the distance the citadel with its sad history looms as I near. I shiver myself awake.

Growing up in a land known for its beauty I was in thrall
to lazy rivers, rolling countrysides and stately
snow-capped mountains

Only later did I learn of the warfare and conquest that
ravaged these bloodsoaked
isles - the human stain that casts a pall over the most serene geographies

The heat was stupefying, and we debated seeing the famous Colosseum. But it dwarfed even the assembled crowd and we milled around, robbed of human scale. I closed my eyes and imagined the tidal waves of sound crashing down on the gladiators, baying for enough blood to set a champion free.

Halfway up a hillface
all on its own
on a deep country night
I spied while speeding past
a swatch of deep gold
a sign of a kindred human spirit
in a scene of everyday domestic holy charm

"Sometimes the hollow sound is only the memory of an echo, slipping into the distance," she said, "I've always believed we were given ears to hear only this." He nodded agreeably, "maple lined lane with fading shadows," he replied, "There is nothing moonlight and gathering clouds won't fix."

The monster was nowhere to be found. Panic and bedlam. But by evening the walking horror had returned of his own will to submit to his fate.

The beast had found the first of the Dr's many attempts at its creation, and realized that from such creatures as we, there could never be freedom.

Halfway up the road
a volley of screams
(the last one quite
blood-curling) collapses
into laughter and he grimaces.

Stupid Halloween. Yet it's
getting more popular here
every year. Look at this one, as Dracula whizzes by on an
e-scooter. And yet he watches, like a braindead zombie.

Leafing through old journals
I find it so laughable all my
experiments at teenage adulthood

And now that I'm here, I have to wonder what the big rush was

My current journal filed with reveries of youth

Take your time young man
it's the most valuable possession you have
