Although Yazoo only released two albums in their career, both were absolutely brilliant and put an end to the prejudice that electronic music sounds just cold and sterile, because many of Yazoo's songs are deeply moving, such as ‘Bad Connection’.

When I first heard this song many years ago on a Goth/Dark Wave compilation, I was immediately fascinated by its structure and drama: it starts off very calmly and then builds up to a symphonic chorus carried by highly emotional female vocals.

Founded in Belfast in 1964, Them were a fantastic band who, with Van Morrison, had a much better singer than the Stones, played a harder blues than them, and yet still managed to produce such wonderfully melancholic tracks as ‘My Lonely Sad Eyes’.

I am sure that almost everyone knows Laurie Anderson's 1981 hit ‘O Superman’ because this song was so unusual that it stuck in the memory of everyone who heard it. But the New York performance artist had a lot more to offer...

Warren Zevon, who died at the age of 56, was an outstanding and brillant songwriter who really deserved a career similar to that of Billy Joel or Elton John – but he was probably too cynical, too political and too dark-humoured for that.

What happens when you play a country song backwards? It's simple – the guy gets everything back: his wife, his car and his job. But joking aside, there's hardly anything better than a good country song that comes from the heart – like this one:

This band underwent several metamorphoses: from Spizzoil to Spizzenergi to Athletico Spizz 80 and Spizzles – and remained original and unconventional throughout: they dared to be different and futuristic, hence they were simply ahead of their time.

Abwärts was a punk band from Hamburg that was always a bit daring from the start and kept evolving until the death of its founder Frank Z. in 2024. They never sounded like your average punk band, but always followed their own path.

I was never the biggest fan of Franz Ferdinand: to me, they always seemed a bit too camp, too clever and too posh. But they had this one song that I loved immediately– and I wished they would have gone a few steps more in that direction.

Ian Dury was certainly not the greatest singer, but had plenty of attitude, wit, intelligence and self-irony instead. In a manner of speaking, he was a character - and with Kilburn & The High Roads, he was also at the forefront of British pub rock.

Don't be fooled by the title and the sweet sounding intro of this song: it's definitely a very different Christmas song, looking at what is supposed to be the most wonderful time of the year from the perspective of a Christmas tree.

Lyrics are in German, though.

What a strange bunch this avantgarde band from San Francisco is, whose members have remained anonymous to this day. And to be honest, some of their albums are simply unlistenable nonsense – but this album from 1980 is truly outstanding.

Okay, disco sucks – but occasionally during disco's golden era, some outstanding songs were produced, such as Amanda Lear's single ‘Follow Me’, released in 1978, in which all elements work together perfectly (albeit rather by accident, I guess).

Oysterband was formed in Canterbury in 1976, and although they were never able to benefit from the folk-punk boom that flourished in the 1980s, they have nevertheless earned a reputation as an excellent live act over the years.

This instrumental by Japan from their 1981 album ‘Tin Drum’ is beauty cast in sound: Mick Karn's bass line is breathtaking, and Steve Jansen's drum groove is nothing short of stunning. Simply a perfect song that couldn't have been done any better.

‘Pillar of Davidson’ by Live (really barmy band name, by the way) is a prime example of excellent tension building within a song, ending in an almost anthemic finale with its dreamlike vocal arrangement. Definitely one of my all-time favourites.

Bob Dylan: brilliant songwriter and lyricist – but definitely not the best performer of his own songs. Hence I prefer covers of his songs by other artists, in this case the fantastic ‘Changing Of The Guards’ by The Gaslight Anthem.

Chrome were at the forefront of experimental electronica bands in the late 1970s, blending elements of punk, psychedelia, noise and industrial. In this sense, Chrome were the Nine Inch Nails of a time when Nine Inch Nails did not yet exist.
