treat every creative you meet like they are successful, fulfilled, and making a living at what they say they do. talk to everyone like they're a pro. don't assume they're struggling just because you don't know their work. this will change the tenor of your conversations.

you guys, SINNERS is so good? Like, I can't believe this is a studio movie. Went in blind as I love to do. Vaguely knew it was a horror film. Then spent the 2+ hours watching this complex allegory unfold. Also, incredible production design. Meticulous directing. Much spectacle. Funny. Go see it.

how is there so much incredible TV to watch but also no jobs.

go see COMPANION! It is streaming now and it's a really fun twisty thriller comedy?! also, if you're into grounded genre, and have managed not to be spoiled/watch the trailer, try and go in blind. It's better that way, and I promise you won't be disappointed.

The hardest truth about breaking into TV writing? 'Good' isn't good enough anymore. Your sample needs to be BLAZING HOT. Not 'shows promise.' Not 'solid.' The kind of script that makes people stop what they're doing and call you immediately.

Even in an uber-competitive industry like TV writing, there will always be people who try to pull you back toward the median (“you don’t need another spec sample”, “the script doesn’t need to be perfect, it’s going to change in development anyway”, etc….)

Ignore those people.

There is an entire mini-series called EXTRAPOLATIONS, which sounds like Black Mirror for climate change, came out in 2023, features a star-studded cast (Meryl Streep, Kit Harrington, Daveed Diggs...), and which I never heard of till today because it's on Apple TV. Has anyone seen? Is it good?

And plenty of people are very vocal online while doing literally nothing else IRL
Something I’ve learned over the years:

Just because you don’t see it happen on social media doesn’t mean it’s not happening.

In fact, some of the best community building I’ve seen *has* to happen offline so strategies can get fine-tuned and aligned.

We’ll need to grant more grace in the now.

SING SING is awesome. A24 totally dropped the ball on marketing and promoting this movie about a theater troupe in a men's prison, but the writing and direction are wonderful and Coleman Domingo is perfect in it. Best Adapted Screenplay nom is so well-deserved.

a hilarious case of “i’m shocked, SHOCKED”. many art forms cost little and require no compromise. art for the masses costing millions DEMANDS accessibility to exist. what divides the pros from the whiners is the ability to deliver BOTH art and commerce. apple.news/AFH9Ls83fQ0u...

Streaming insiders have claimed they’re being made to rewrite scripts for viewers who use their phones while watching. Is this the end of prestige TV? Or pure fiction?

It's OKAY to reach out to your reps right now. They're your team! Obvi make sure they're okay first. And don't assume they read the thing you sent right before the holidays. But if you're easing back into work, let them know you're ready to chat when they are. It's not insensitive if you're gentle.

I know LA is nursing what feels like a giant open wound right now, but my medium-term hope is that these fires push the industry to activate, rather than becoming a reason to hit pause yet again. The vibes will never be immaculate. If we want TV and film to stay in LA, we have to make it so.
