The purpose of this account is to raise awareness about the rich world of shoujo media before WWII and its connections to modern Japanese art and queer culture. Much of this material is obscure and/or untranslated, and we hope to illuminate this history for those curious about it.

Yumeji Takehisa was one of the first shoujo artists, and was one of the most influential of his day. Almost all other names of the era had some connection to him, and he did work for many shoujo magazines of the day. His unique aesthetic style set the stage for pop art in the 20th century.

Kashou Takabatake (高畠華宵) was perhaps the most popular artist for young people in the 1920s, his work often capturing the essence of an era known for rapid cultural and aesthetic change. He is also one of the earliest artists with a focus on same-sex affection for both young women and men.

From the 1920s, french-style doll-making exploded in popularity. Future artist and fashion designer Junichi Nakahara would find a love of doll-making, a hobby he shared with his older sisters. In 1932, he launched his long career by hosting an exhibition in a department store in Ginza, Tokyo.

1925年10月19日から137回連載された加藤武雄作「審判」の挿絵を夢二が手掛けました。ペンを用いて繊細な筆致で、夢二は登場人物の心象風景を抽象的に表す試みにも挑みました。

Katsuji Matsumoto (松本かつぢ) has a good claim to be the first shoujo manga artist, along with one of the era's most famous illustrators. He helped lead the surge of popularity of Shoujo no Tomo in the mid-1930s, and would have outsized impact on Japanese popular culture in the mid-20th century.

Mihoko Fukaya (深谷美保子) was one of the only women working in the shoujo art world in the 1920s-30s, made even more remarkable by the fact that she was physically disabled, likely from polio. However, she remains obscure even in Japan, with almost no information on her in English.
