Through S1, Vel and Cinta had similar ideals, but polar opposite ideas of how they could work together within the Rebellion, and this frame reminds us of this visually.

I’m also interested in how we get *into* this frame, though:
Happy New Year and all that jazz!

Check our website and Substack to see more shots we're looking forward to in the coming year.

Before #ThePitt's season 2 premiere, we look back at how the show sets up for events episodes in advance - this scene from Episode 9 had plenty of foreshadowing!

Full disclosure, this #MyLifeisMurder 1.05 “Feet of Clay” title card made our list mostly because I (Mel) have uttered some version of Alexa’s rant*.

I'm also amused they make use of the “don’t walk pants / walk skirt” signals, which actually grace several crossings in the Melbourne CBD.

In the ‘setup’ shot (0:00-0:04), a doc draws attention to the monitor by pushing buttons; after the jolt, the camera cuts to that monitor in the foreground in focus and newly angled (for more drama!), before heartbeat lines draw in the title card.

"My Life is Murder" pilot episode uses not one but two Melbourne icons — Flinders Street Station and a tram — to establish exactly where Alexa is doing her sleuthing!

This shot from Spike Lee’s “Get on the Bus” shows several men who have spent the last many hours fighting, agreeing, and trying to see each others’ points of view, now having come nearly to their wits’ end.

If you’ve got a giant Kaiju plushie who is going to hug a scaly creature into poof!oblivion, what better to compare it to than . . . a futuristic Christ-figure invading the physical manifestation of an AI murder agent?

Sure, why not!

How is the blocking in this #DoubleIndemnity scene practical, dramatic, and symbolic, all at once?

One of the more famous examples of the 'overlapping faces' shot is from Persona, but La Pointe Courte (pic1) set it a template ten years earlier.

Countless movies, shows, music videos, and promo shots have riffed on this type of shot since, including Arcane (pic2) and The Princess Bride (pic3).

#HomeAlone 2: Lost in New York builds on a lot of Home Alone’s gags.

Both times Kate (Catherine O'Hara) realizes Kevin is missing, the structure is the same: exchange with Peter (John Heard), cut to CU, Kate barrels the camera, screams KEVIN!, hard cut to an empty shot of the place Kevin is.

This scene from Christmasy melodrama All That Heaven Allows is comprised of two moving shots, both achieving different goals to represent Cary's loneliness, then shock.

See our Substack next week for a full breakdown of how it works so effectively.
