It is the moral, ethical, and yes legally right for Democratic States and Cities to engage in Soft Secession by withholding federal taxes. This would not violate the Supremacy Clause, has immense precedent in US history, & the time to act is NOW.

I was walking my dog in the morning yesterday when I saw NC National Guardspeople doing physical training at a school nearby. I climbed the hill so I could see them and shouted as loud as I could, "Remember your oath!!!" No one looked my way, but my voice echoed.

This morning, they were back but with very loud rock music playing and someone standing guard.
I ran into a young guardswoman and said, "Thank you, and remember your oath." With tears running down my face I said, "We are scared."
She looked at me kindly and said, "I know," as she walked away.

I have written an essay about higher education. With our culture in decline, we need to rethink and create versions of kinds of institutions, even on a small scale, as existing ones weaken and collapse. By preserving institutional cultures, we can rebuild them when we are able to.

I'm going to ask again: is it lawful to assemble outside a Federal Building? If not, why not? If so, on what authority are police not only clearing away protestors from that space but using unprovoked violence to do so?

Violence begets violence, but we are nearing the point at which we need to show the other side that we will match them life for life. I fear that our refusal to do so is only emboldening them to continue and to escalate reich-wing violence. They think us weak, passive, scared, and vulnerable.
