It was a privilege to be at last night's Association for International Broadcasting Awards amongst other global nominees from the big broadcasters. Great to see and hear the excellent work of independent journalists and programme makers continuing, despite the many barriers we face. Well done all.
There were debates on whether the climate question is dead, installation arts and traditional Saudi Arabian music. That was certainly a first for me!

The great thing about this year’s SXSW festival is the sheer range of talks and events that were held, some great, some less so, but nonetheless making up an eclectic mix. So we had the chance to be part of the audience for a recording of The Rest is Politics, with Ed Balls and Alistair Campbell.

Another way is to widen the definition of Classical music instrumentation without dumbing it down, as guitarist Sean Shibe spoke about in my feature for this week’s BBC World Service’s Weekend programme. Have a listen if you missed it vimeo.com/1089525886 or 46'25" www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/...

Yesterday’s session at the magnificent Christ Church in Spitalfields heard from BBC Radio 3, the LSO and the South Bank on creative response such as using immersive and theatrical experiences that recreate the times in which some of the music was written for.

Hearing about how classical music can reach wider audiences has become an ever more pressing question so it was great to hear it debated at the SXSW Festival that’s come to London from Austin, Texas for the first time.

I follow Kai in Germany and learn how through his Christian faith, he’s reaching out to Jewish communities around the world in a documentary that’s made the Critics’ Choice in the i Paper, Telegraph, Radio Times and Mail on Sunday.

Being the grandson of the greatest mass murderer in history has its challenges. That’s the story of Kai Höss whose grandfather Rudolf Höss was the Commandant of Auschwitz. In some of the most compelling interviews I’ve ever done Kai talks of first learning of Rudolf in a school history lesson.
