Friday news dump (well, the other one): UVa has a president. Since this piece was published, several high-powered state lawmakers have said, in as many words, "we'll see about it," and the national AAUP has condemned the appointment. www.chronicle.com/article/amid...

Brown and Arizona are of course completely different campuses -- UA is much larger, in a sprawling city, and obviously public -- but this piece points out that Brown has made it part of its mission to be open to Providence.
The discourse over whether Brown U. should wall itself off from the public reminds me of this comment from a safety chief at the U. of Arizona after some called for card access to every building on campus. www.nytimes.com/2025/12/16/u...

Me & my friends had thoughts!!

Kicker: "Baker grew up in VA & lived in the South most of her life. She finds it astounding that anyone would think of a public university in the South as apolitical. 'No one who lives in the South,' she says, 'believes that Southern universities are not political.'"
