A perfect complement to yesterday’s post: Apparently you can ignore the Highway Code as a professional taxi driver, strike a pedestrian crossing on a green signal, and be allowed to carry on just doing your job. I’m sure the driver is “contrite” though, so all good.

Deploying a weapon of mass destruction that left 8 children in hospital -- and then FLEEING THE SCENE -- is apparently a 'cause for concern' meriting barely a year of suspended license and 200 hours of 'community service'. Crack on, Scottish justice system! www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/scottis...

« La voiture quand elle est utilisée comme ça a été le cas, sans respect, sans responsabilité, devient une arme. Une arme létale. » #PaulVarry
Il y un an, Paul Varry était tué par un automobiliste après une altercation sur une piste cyclable à Paris. Nous avons passé 6 mois avec ses parents, désormais dans l'attente de faire face à l'auteur des faits.

He had been seen on camera multiple times looking at his phone *while reversing*. He failed to take proper precautions and look left before setting off. And all he gets is a year off driving?!?? I am ... speechless.

In January 2023, 22-year-old cyclist Emma Burke Newman was killed exiting Glasgow's George V Bridge when a lorry driver making a left turn struck her as she pulled out of the bike box. Yesterday I visited the newly redesigned junction. This change didn't happen by accident. 🧵

Another Monday, another email to my elected leaders about cycling safety. When all we have is paint, could we maybe compel drivers -- and especially those in buses and taxis who require special licensing to operate -- to obey the Highway Code and stay out of bike boxes? Cool, thanks.

#EmmaBurkeNewman was not the only student who died in Glasgow road violence during one dreadful week in early 2023. Chinenye Okonkwo's killler has now been sentenced to 3+ years in jail.

In 13 weeks Glasgow will have a safer junction where cyclist #EmmaBurkeNewman died 27 Jan 2023. The relative speed of this work is due to persistent engagement from Emma's loved ones and a receptive @glasgowcitycouncil.bsky.social and highlights the burden put on grieving people to push for change.

This dangerous junction had previously been flagged to GCC officials by @gobikeglasgow.bsky.social. It is gratifying to see recent consultation on thoughtful designs for making this a safer and more appealing place to move around, regardless of the way you travel.
