Te Moana o Reo is about to be reviewed on RNZ (this morning 10.35am NZ time) ...am waiting with bated breath to see what Elizabeth Heritage says. I feel very fond of this book, it's a celebration of Aotearoa languages and has my first ever essay in it, on working in Japan #multilingual #nzfic #essay

Amazing to see this Japanese-to-English short story, by Kaori Ekuni, get some more love! The Japanese original text is also included on the page. CW: DV. Happy January in Japan! #xl8
Today I’ll be reading Kaori Ekuni’s “Lunch Ticket” (translated by Sharni Wilson), compliments of Lunch Ticket.

Ekuni is probably best known in English for her novel Twinkle Twinkle (trans. Emi Shimokawa), about an asexual woman married to a gay man partnered with someone else. It’s a great read.

In 2102, Michi goes undercover as a maid for a hacking job, while in 2030, Ryo sells his appearance to a tech company. Their lives intersect to expose the dirty laundry of neo-feudal futuristic Japanese elite in “The Secret”, written by Fumio Takano and translated into English by Sharni Wilson.
