Later, I made my way to The Fog Hospital where the pre-booked limo spilled me out— a girl baked with shadows. All my needs were waiting for me: earmuffs, kettledrums and censer, a cake in the shape of my mother. A priest asked me for a large donation to the beefeaters’ memorial unit, showing me a display of shoes I avoided all my sisters with this trick of becoming a fenland ditch. No one knows a ditch. One consultant hooked his dentures out and turned to me to please unknot his tongue— the spelling bee was starting soon. I chewed my wings, I tore the drapes, I made my assignation to a general ward of mist where no one ever gave their heart away to the orangutans. Next year, I shall return to them, to see their clashing suits, to feel their bites leave perfect circles on a body I can’t see.
