Things I’ve learned following a surprise binge over the last few days:
1) No show benefits more from the “Skip Intro” button than Star Trek: Enterprise.
2) Season 4 is leagues better that everything preceding it.
3) Travis Mayweather is the most inessential character in 60 years of the franchise.

@suboptimaldad.gobirds.online Very glad to see that we’ll be getting our head-to-head out of the way this week. I’ve already kicked off with a 5/6 that I expect to be a crushing loss.

The tragic story of a man who gets a job immediately after getting out of the hospital, drinks high-end wine, and immediately has two stunningly beautiful women fall in love with him. The poor bastard.

I like to think that we’re about to start the 46th inning of Game 3 of the World Series.
November 2, 2025 at 12:09 AM
@slangsonsports.bsky.social Sarah, is this only the second time that the World Series has gone to November? The only other time I can recall is in 2001.

Also, with Opening Day back on March 27, is this the longest baseball season ever? And the first to go from March to November?

I think the first time I ever encountered a golem was in a Commodore 64 game. Then it was an X-Files episode. But now, it’s time to wrap up my month-long Halloween extravaganza by unveiling this double dose of highly entertaining golem-themed motion pictures. Get that candy, kids.
2 golems, from 1920 to 1979. "When Dracula, Frankenstein’s monster, the Mummy, and a host of other horror icons were lining up at the doors of Universal Studios in search of eternal fame, somehow the humble golem failed to get the invite."--Shane Wilson (@shanewilson.bsky.social)

Well, that blows.

Although, when you strand that many runners, you kind of don’t deserve the win.

I usually wait until the Series ends to say that it’s time for @notmrtibbs.com to get started on the Tracker, but at this point in the game, I think he may already be good to go.

It can be a real curse when a movie’s title manages to capture the entire plot AND the whole tone of the piece. After that, where else is there to go? Happily for FRANKENHOOKER, there’s plenty of room for silliness, gross-out spectacle, and excellent physical comedy from a former Pet of the Month.
"As much as 'Frankenhooker' delivers exactly the eyes-covered, laughing-in-shock amusement you’re expecting, the movie genuinely surpasses itself in the finale. The title may be on the nose, but the tale it tells is a refreshing punch in the groin."--Shane Wilson (@shanewilson.bsky.social)

Sure, your horror anthology might have Stephen King and Clive Barker. But does it have the Chattering Teeth of Death? Matt Frewer doing murderous hand puppetry? Christopher Lloyd in skintight leather and a lace choker? Then my friend, you’re not QUICKSILVER HIGHWAY. Try again next time.

Pablo Larraín sets aside Jackie Kennedy and Princess Di to focus his attention on a much more intriguing subject: how Chilean strongman Augusto Pinochet was a vampire. A cautionary tale for any public servants out there who maybe don’t want to be remembered by history as literal monsters.
"Invoking the vampire legend is a canny choice, because it not only connects Chile to the broad historical arc of oppressive dictatorships, but provides a context to help understand the grotesque body count under Pinochet’s rule."--Shane Wilson (@shanewilson.bsky.social) on "El Conde" (2023)

This is notable as a zombie film where there are so many little pieces of satire to squeeze in that the zombie part feels like almost an afterthought. Still, I’m pretty sure the zombies are in the right, so you can’t say the filmmakers didn’t take a stance.

Things I expect this idiot administration to announce before 2025 is over:
- Pearl Milling Co. is ordered to restore the name of Aunt Jemina
- Tomatoes are from the deadly nightshade family, and no one must eat them
- US embassy in China being moved from Beijing back to its original home in Peking

You know, you write a review hoping to reference the unsettling trend toward censorship and authoritarianism as reflected in the arts, and then the despot goes and makes things even worse prior to publication. So just know that while I’d love to take credit for my insight, fascism is just too fast.

No one’s doing particularly well these days, but certainly not the kids. SNORKELING is sympathetic and occasionally insightful look at the disconnection and despair that teens are feeling. (Although you may be surprised to learn that drugs are not great. It’s true!)

If you’re going to take on the moniker ”M dot Strange,” you’d better be prepared to live up to the immense expectations that carries. My friends, that bar has been cleared, and I’m pleased to offer two Apocrypha in a row with this animated stew of madness. Say it with me: “I live. I hunger.”

A genuine honor to write the entry that inducts this epic of sweet, fun-loving insanity into the Apocrypha. Michelle Yeoh at her best, spectacular editing, and a solid answer to the question of what to do when you have more ideas than you know what to do with: use ‘em all!
More Apocrypha! "The unique territory that this story stakes out for itself is to not merely go from the ridiculous to the sublime, but to contend that the ridiculous _is_ the sublime."--Shane Wilson (@shanewilson.bsky.social) on "Everything Everywhere all at Once" (2022)
