AI is a huge net negative and deserves as much scrutiny and skepticism as we can possibly muster

My current focus areas are Rust-based implementations of parsers, language servers and tree-sitter, ASTs and compilers, TUIs, as well as a Datafusion-based RDF triples store that is currently toy-quality.

I also have an RDF-powered content site written in Elixir and Phoenix that needs more TLC.
My go-to example of something that is technologically very long in the tooth but basically immortal due to network effects is BoardGameGeek. I have debated often whether I could make a more modern and pleasant UX for that niche without having that user base or all the domain-specific content ready.

If you have recommendations for space/astronomy documentaries, lay 'em on me. We watched The Farthest last night about Voyager and it cheered me up a lot to escape into that world of hope and discovery for a couple hours.

The RubyGems “security incident”
Ruby Central posted an extremely concerning “Incident Response Timeline” today, in which they make a number of exaggerated or purely misleading claims. Here’s my effort to set the record straight. Fir...

Ghost of Yotei is sooooo pretty. I only left the first region last night, and got some really beautiful story beats (that are not in the screenshots).

There's a part of my brain muttering "man this is so cool" every few minutes while playing Ghost of Yotei, and Tsushima before it. Very happy with my time spent with each.

Every time I think I remember how hideous it is to read DHH's writing with my own eyes, I've still always underestimated how bad it is.

Saw a GitHub phishing attempt using an impersonation of a YCombinator account and a malicious GitHub app, be careful out there! (Already reported)

I am so unbelievably bad at Silksong. One boss kept me stymied for at least an hour straight yesterday, and it's still quite early.

We're definitely on the timeline where we wind up with a real life Wayland-Yutani in ~100 years. Honestly, that's like... kind of a hopeful take, even. If you put various contemporary CEOs into the world of the Alien movie franchise I have no reason to believe they'd be any less cruel to employees.

Me reading lots of positive hype about Superman (2025)
Ok cool, I don't love Gunn's other work but I guess I'll give it a shot

Me actually watching Superman, roughly every 5 minutes:
a woman is making a funny face in front of the word what .
Alt: Anna Kendrick in Scott Pilgrim Vs The World, saying "What?" incredulously

The thing about Alien: Earth that requires my strongest suspense-of-disbelief is that anyone of any age would enjoy watching the Ice Age movie franchise in the year ~2120 lmao

It's so hamfisted.

This is the *only* Nix I think people should voluntarily become familiar with.
Nix was a male merqaal who grew up on a jungle world. During the Imperial Era, he was captured by the Sixth Kin to be sold but was rescued by the girl Kay Vess. The two then became loyal partners in crime. Nix joined Vess on her journey across the criminal underworld in 3 ABY.

AFAICT GitHub does *not* want you to use your private RSS feed anymore. It got wayyyyyy less helpful and way more noisy about 6 days ago.

what's stupid about "upskill w/ AI or die" is that we're currently talking about at best a ~25% productivity gain. that's probably in the same category as "learning all your IDE features", but govts / corps aren't in a full panic to push LSP onto everyone

The honest reason I don't have microtransactions/season pass/ads/100 DLCs/etc in Balatro isn't just about the ethics of those practices but because when I play other games that have those things it makes me want to put my computer in the dishwasher and set it to pots & pans

This timeline is a nightmare and this is way, way down on my personal list of garbage things that LLMs have brought to society, but "an upcoming text editor has to have a status page so it can report outages of all its AI slop features" is definitely sad-funny.
