aside from the lack of physical stores and paper catalogs, Amazon really isn't doing anything that Sears hadn't been doing for decades... ecommerce is just mail-order with a different interface. If Sears had stuck it out until the dot-com era they could have crushed Amazon out like a cigarette butt

reading a 1993 NYT article about Sears junking its catalog division, just a couple of years before online retail exploded. it's kind of amazing how badly they fumbled ecommerce. At the end of the article it even mentions they were using Prodigy as an adjunct to their catalog sales. breathtaking
