A heartfelt thank you for making AMERICAN KINGS an instant New York Times bestseller.
Love generally played well and the Packers lost as a team, but hours later, the miss to Musgrave stands out. He had him and the ball wasn’t even close enough to draw a flag.

From my book: For whatever reason, Caleb Williams has often been a precocious slow starter. But when he heats up, watch out.

Harbaugh’s Ravens were one of the toughest opponents during the Patriots dynasty — until one moment, when Belichick set a trap for his opponent and opposing coach.

I think — think — that this is the first time John Harbaugh has been fired as a coach at any level. He’s 63. He’s been coaching since 1984. Amazing, given his chosen profession. Not, given his ability.

The Tomlin-Harbaugh rivalry has such a describable feel: cold, bruising, raw, high stakes, but maybe not the highest. Both have won with different stars and styles. The Pats, Chiefs and Peyton define the past 20 AFC years, but what these two have done is still remarkable.

One of the reasons the Falcons didn’t hire Bill Belichick in 2024, per me @dvnjr.bsky.social and Jeremy Fowler, is that they didn’t want to be searching for a new head coach in two years, after he’d presumably break the wins record.

Inside Bill Belichick's failed offseason job hunt
As the NFL has moved on from this year's firing-and-hiring cycle, two questions remain: Why is Bill Belichick suddenly and seemingly unemployable? And will he coach again?

Matthew Stafford has been more than a proficient quarterback, against top competiton. He’s been an artist. He is the MVP.

Gonna miss what I'll always call Rich Stadium. It was on the funky side, and had some real magic. Weird stuff happened there. 35-3. David Treadwell hitting the upright twice. Even the Ferguson-Hooks Hail Mary. New venues have all the frills but that quality is always elusive.

Sports book of the year? So many. I loved American Kings by my friend, @sethwickersham.bsky.social. Even if it also gave me High School Quarterback PTSD. Exceptionally well done.

RIP to an absolute legend. Dr. Ranly was a kind, sweet man — and the only professor I ever feared, in all the ideal ways.

Enjoyed talking to ⁦‪@NPR‬⁩ about how the NFL, against all sanity, has become conducive to the old-man quarterback’s game.

Philip Rivers' return to the NFL, by the numbers
Philip Rivers is coming out of retirement at age 44 for a shot at playing for the Indianapolis Colts, who are struggling to make the playoffs. He last played in the NFL in 2021.

17. AMERICAN KINGS: A BIOGRAPHY OF THE QUARTERBACK by @sethwickersham.bsky.social

a history lesson, a topographical analysis (and perhaps criticism) of the industry, and a love letter to the art and artistry of what a quarterback is. a spectacular read and parable on the high costs of fame.

"You could have a delicious moment where Kraft and Belichick get busts together," a veteran Hall of Fame voter told ESPN. "I'd pay a lot of money to watch that. ... Of course, only one of the two men could get in. And I'd pay a helluva lot of money to see that."

Still 5 weeks left, so there's plenty of time to sort out the MVP. Hopefully voters remember to look at Christian McCaffrey's year. Usually MVP goes to a Q, and OPOY goes to a skill player. Right now, the reverse should happen.

I still think one of the most ridiculous stats is that Gronk averaged more yards a catch than Hill, Jefferson, and OBJ.

Brady once told me that accuracy is about “decisiveness.” He just mentioned how the greats know presnap which target has the best matchup. If he’s covered, they move to the outlet. If he’s covered, they throw it away. The best have thought that way for decades.
