Happy Banniversary, World!
🧵5 years ago today, the #NuclearBan Treaty entered into force meaning it became legally binding intenational law.

Thanks to the treaty, for the first time in history nuclear weapons are illegal and there is a plan to eliminate them. #5yearsTPNW 🥳

1/ 80 years ago at 11.02 am on August 9, JST, the US dropped the atomic bomb on #Nagasaki. In a flash, thousands were dead or injured. By the end of 1945, 74,000 had died. And the consequences from the radiation have affected the survivors to this day.

Moments ago, the third #NPTPrepCom failed to adopt any outcome, reflecting a horrifying lack of urgency in response to current risks.

Yet we've been encouraged by constructive leadership from #TPNW states, and their efforts to reinforce non-proliferation and disarmament norms.

Kyrgyzstan (which to date has abstained on resolutions relating to the TPNW) has today announced they will join the TPNW. 👏🏼🇰🇬👏🏼 #nuclearban
In today's general debate at the #NPTPrepCom, Kyrgyzstan announced that “has made the political decision to join to the TPNW” because they are “committed to ensuring that future generations live without the threat posed by weapons of mass destruction.” 👏🇰🇬

🧵1/ We are deeply saddened by the passing of Pope Francis, a global leader whose moral courage and voice for peace shaped the movement to eliminate nuclear weapons.

@pontifexes.bsky.social declared both the use and possession of nuclear weapons “immoral” and supported the #NuclearBan Treaty.

1/ In these uncertain times, some argue that nuclear weapons are the answer to Europe’s security. But, as Melissa Parke puts it, the future of Europe will not be written in the shadow of mushroom clouds but by those who believe in diplomacy and disarmament.

1/ With President Trump offering to agree with Russia and China to eliminate nuclear weapons, Europe should not be doubling down on so-called deterrence. #NuclearBan

Today, @nuclearban.bsky.social had the honour to witness Nihon Hidankyo accept the Nobel Peace Prize.
Hibakusha have borne unimaginable pain to pursue peace. Without their stories and advocacy, the #nuclearban treaty wouldn't be a reality. I commit to carrying their legacy forward. #HoldtheMemory
