New paper alert!

In this new GJI paper, led by Emile Serra in Strasbourg, we image the upper mantle and mantle transition zone under Indonesia. By utilising the Backus-Gilbert SOLA method, we develop seismic velocity models with quantified resolution and uncertainties.

This makes me so sad! My favorite media interviews were with Science in Action - somehow the conversation just flowed, and I got unexpected compliments from distant friends and colleagues who happened to tune in. The world needs more in-depth, accessible coverage of science, not less.
Science in Action on the BBC World Service celebrated its 50th birthday in 2014, but sadly won't be around to celebrate its 61st next month.

Let's hope Quirks & Quarks reaches a healthy old age.🎉🍾🎉
CBC Radio's science show 'Quirks & Quarks' celebrated its 50-year anniversary in a fun episode that invited experts to discuss the last 50 years of research in cosmology, genetics, climate, computers, agriculture and speculate on the next 50 years! 🧪

New paper alert on the mineralogy of the deep mantle led by Justin Leung at @oxuniearthsci.bsky.social. Justin used mineral physics modelling to interpret the seismic models developed by former PhD student Federica Restelli derived from normal mode observations

New paper alert, led by @flatallerie.bsky.social at @oxuniearthsci.bsky.social. We combined finite-frequency theory with Backus-Gilbert based inference to develop a 1-step inversion framework to image upper mantle structure with 3D resolution and uncertainties.
🔍Latallerie et al. bring a new tomographic method to image the upper mantle with control over resolution and uncertainty in 3D, plus a fresh look at theoretical errors.

This is a huge mistake. My experience on NERC panels is that resubmissions score higher and are more likely to be funded: the review process improves good proposals that should not be lost (along with the time spent on them).
Really disappointing new policy from NERC banning resubmissions of grant applications

Many of us, including me, have won grants on resubmission,

using the reviews to improve the application

This is is neither fair nor productive

For an earthquake prediction to be meaningful, it has to specify a time, location, and magnitude range that is unlikely to occur randomly.

So who can predict earthquakes? - NO ONE.

This video breaks it down.

So NERC have quietly announced this afternoon that they're delaying/cancelling/suspending, whatever 'not launched at this time' means, their 2025 Independent Research Fellowship round. After announcing it 34 days ago.

Flip-flopping like this is really detrimental to early career researchers.

Nice to see our Greenland seismic-seiche paper still getting some attention :)
OK, this is wild.

In September 2023, geophysicists across the world started monitoring a very odd signal coming from the ground under them.

It was picked up in the Arctic. And Antarctica. It was detected everywhere, every 90 seconds, as regular as a metronome, for *nine days*.

What the HELL?

A new study by @seismokoel.bsky.social has revealed that two continent-size regions in Earth’s deep mantle have distinctive histories and resulting chemical composition, in contrast to the common assumption they are the same.
