Cardiovascular disease is deeply connected to incarceration—but often overlooked.

In the JUSTICE study, over half of the 471 people recently released had at least one uncontrolled risk factor.

Future analyses will look at how health evolves in the months following release.

For Black History Month, we recognize Dr. George Simkins’ role in prohibiting racial segregation by hospitals. Preceding the Civil Rights Act, he won a landmark 1963 case against a North Carolina hospital, making racial segregation illegal in a hospital setting.
