Hello there!

We're an independent charity, who since 1996 have been excavating in and around the village of Sedgeford. So far we've found a Saxon settlement and cemetery, Roman farm, WW1 aerodrome, and an Iron Age ritual site, all within one parish in north-west Norfolk.
The bookings for the 2026 season are now open!

The 2026 season will be a special one for us as we will be celebrating our 30th anniversary, so there has never been a better time to join us!

Just visit www.sharp.org.uk for more details!

Another fascinating talk this week from Ray Baldry on the work of our volunteers in assessing the palaeopathology of the population excavated by us at Sedgeford.

Mid week update!

Sunday proved very wet, and thunderstorms threatened, so we managed to open up Trench 24 and clean Trench 25 after machining it last week. The rest hid and cleaned the last of the daub from last year, whilst others voyaged into King's Lynn to see put hoard and Sea Henge on display.

Impromptu talk by @lucyjkoster.bsky.social on determining animal versus human bone on trench, following up on yesterday's training our volunteers had with our reference collection.

After a rainy few days, we're finally getting into the nitty gritty and delving into the silty sand.

We've reopened Trench 25 from last year and already have a contender for find of the week with this lovely bit of Samien found by Alison!

Taking a couple of weeks away from @brusselsbioarch.bsky.social for fieldwork at @sedgefordarch.bsky.social in Norfolk! Our human remains volunteers have made an excellent start so far and I will be spamming updates as we go 😊💀💀

A few of us took the opportunity given the wet weather today (sadly on our first day of the season) to see the hoard found during our previous excavations on display at Lynn Museum.

What's the 'best' thing you've ever found is always a tricky one but my thoughts always go back to the butchered whale bone (that's a bit of vertebrae I'm holding) from an early medieval pit at Sedgford. Also, the first feature I ever dug! @sedgefordarch.bsky.social

We might not have as clear features as @durotrigesdig.bsky.social (orangish brown sandy silt cut into brownish orange silty sand never shows up well on camera), but we definitely have some good archaeology!

Following recent media coverage on archaeological reproductions, we wanted to clarify that SHARP is more than happy for people to make replicas of our objects! We are funded by the public, so we are strong believers in public access to archaeology, and that archaeology belongs to everyone.

We're 94% of the way to our goal, so are very close to being able to achieve our goals of becoming more sustainable and eco-friendly.
SHARP, the project I'm involved with, are fundraising to help improve their site facilities and have only 3 days left to reach their goal.
After Christmas is a tough time for us all, but please consider helping one of the few affordable archaeological projects that's out there.

We provide everything needed (including lunch!) and you'll get to take your creations home with you.

The fundraiser to help us is still live, so if you want to donate please feel free to support our exciting plans.
Sustainability at SHARP: The first step
At the end of November a small number of team members were busy onsite. Despite the cold, short daylight hours, and a very damp day, we jam packed the visit with several meetings with different groups...

Want to have a go at archaeology? Don't know what to get an archaeology-mad person for Christmas?

SHARP runs 'dig for the day' taster sessions. These include getting to dig on a real archaeological site, as well as taking part in processing finds and enviro samples.

Did you know that you can see one of our amazing finds on display at the British Museum?

The Sedgeford Torc was first found when ploughing in the the 1960s, and we found the missing terminus during our own excavations 40 years later!
