They reflect. Constantly.

SIMPLE SESSIONS #YOUTHWORK

Early in my youth work career, I designed what I thought was the perfect session on the dangers of stereotypes for a group of young people aged 12-13.

→ Relevant real world examples
→ Multiple choice answers
→ Layered counters to promote discussion

"How do I make the young people feel comfatable around me"?

A question I was asked from a new staff member yesterday during her supervision. I told her

Watched the knife crime doc on BBC, Horrifying watch!. Politicians must corelate the data of the increase in violence with the closing down of activities for young people. The youth dont just need policing they need resourcing!

More youth clubs

Love the process

#youthwork is an infinite skill; no one ever "completes" it.

A growth mindset, curiosity, and enthusiasm are crucial for longevity.

Organic learning matters

Experiences in #youthwork, even in unpredictable environments, shape essential skills.

Might be good? Might be challenging?

So how do you get the most out of these experiences in order to improve?

"No job to big or small"

Us #youthworkers often have to wear many hats and partake in vastly different duties in our roles.

Once a collegue said to me

" I shouldnt be doing this I have more important things to be getting on with"

Dont get to reliant on your Qualifications to get a job in #youthwork

80% of where you could progress to as a #youthworker will be through a combination of having work mentors, networking and standards you commit to.

Last week I apologised to a young person for blaming them for something.

Vulnerability, accountability, and self-reflection (such as apologising for mistakes) build respect and rapport.

It enables young people to see their #youthworker as a relatable, supportive human being.

Supervisions!

Having supervisions use to feel like i was constantly being judged and honestly i use to come away from them with lower self esteem than before.

Its shaped the way i do supervisions with staff as collaborations rather than judgement. Here are 4 ways i conduct them

Youth workers are very underpaid. Problem is, outside of us in the industry, #youthwork isn't respected as a profession. And why not? Many of us invest in ourselves to get qualifications and spend time working for nothing just to gain valuable experience.

#youthwork = Leave it better:

I believe Success as a #youthworker is measured by leaving environments, projects, and young people better than you found them.
