On a journey to the west.
Started the public holiday with a long walk along the Darebin creek through Thornbury. Attended to some laundry and had breakfast. Need to make a quick pickle of carrot and daikon, to add to the #PrawnSandwichBrigade bahn mi for #MVCvSYD... but first, 日本語 practice.

Wrapping up a busy sunday having kabu with soboro ankake (again), sauté turnip greens, butter rice and slaw. And toasting tomorrow's public holiday (and rest day) with a Starward #whisky highball. A perfect drink for these warm nights. 乾杯!

Solid 7-a-side run of #GrassrootsFootball this morning. Which was not a bad effort considering the smoky conditions. Now I can spend the remainder of the day walking around like a cripple and feeling like I've smoked half a pack of cigarettes.

Step outside from the venue, to load some gear out, and the air smells of woodsmoke. That's not good...

It's show day, so time to tune the Aerolyte in readiness. Wound up like a marching snare so it's tighter than a nun's knickers and gives out an absolute crack!

We are generously provisioned with Vietnamese mint, so bahn mi will be the #PrawnSandwichBrigade go-to for the #BigBlue on Monday evening. Need to make up a batch of char hsiu marinade today in readiness. #MVCvSYD

Got out and logged 42km #cycling the Darebin and Merri creeks, while the temperature was still cool. Have up some temporary shading to protect some of the garden from the forecast maximum of 40°C. And doing a load of laundry.

Last solitary gourmet Hakurei turnip exploration for the week. Air fried turnips with lime-miso glaze, green beans, chicken katsu and green salad. It'll be a light tea tomorrow (show day), but will revisit the braised turnip and chicken.

Day 5 and the really active fermentation has stopped. Cabbage is still a little crunchy, but there is a nice tang to it. With a couple of really hot days to come, the sauerkraut is going into the fridge for safe keeping. Then it'll be divided into jars.

Re-upping this: tomorrow will be a hot one in #Melbourne (>40°C). Night Cat has top class air conditioning, so come along for cool vibes. #hpf
If you're at a loose end this coming long weekend, our pals BirdSnake are launching their new album Biofilter at the Night Cat on Saturday. #hpf will be setting the mood earlier in the evening. Come along and check us out in the round.

English debates “they.” Japanese debates “I.” This week we look at how pronouns, names and suffixes encode gender — often in opposite ways.
Just between you and me: Gender and Japanese pronouns
Japanese pronouns reveal gender in unexpected ways, complicating how speakers express identity compared with current English.

Returned from QVM, put away the groceries and got out #running. Worked on the distance and endurance base two days ago, so today was a tempo session: shorter (7km) and faster pace. Gratefully fuelled by #espresso. ☕️😂

Double trouble! When one #coffee simply isn't enough; and the barista insists you try the batch brew (gifting you one). Because it's delicate and floral - and really good... so not even 07:00 and three cups to the good.

Two vessels, a bit of prep - all up under an hour: fettuccine with zucchini and tomatoes. Zucchini fresh from the garden, basil isn't ready yet. Tonight's solitary gourmet effort.
January 22, 2026 at 8:40 AM
Harvested a lot of zucchini from the garden, so going to make a veg based pasta sauce this evening. Will harvest turnips tomorrow for further explorations (air fried, with lime and miso glaze). Surplus zucchini gifted to sons v1.0 and 2.0 (along with cucumber, rocoto chilis and limes). #UrbanAg

Problem solving skills and basic electrical knowledge have allowed me to effect a simple domestic appliance repair. Satisfying to have both the tools and the skills. Our classic designer luminaire is once again functional.

Two weeks on from bushfires hitting Harcourt, local breweries have been finding ways to band together, fundraise and survive.

We chatted to some of those directly impacted about their efforts and the importance of supporting local.
Local Beer Rises From Harcourt Fires
After bushfires tore through Harcourt and other parts of Central Victoria two weeks ago, Rock & Ranges were left with just two kegs of beer. The rest of their stock was lost – alongside significant am...

Since 2001, laws along these lines have been accumulating on the corpus of Australian legislation like arterial plaque. Which gives a nice impression of action to satisfy short term interests and lower any political heat. The hard yards of concrete, real world action though... *crickets*
“Australia has now cemented another authoritarian law which gives police and politicians unchallenged authority to outlaw any group they don’t like by designating them a hate group, based on vibes and maybes.” - @amyremeikis.bsky.social

Some ideas for helping out those in #hospo who have lost stock, produce and more, due to #VicFires. Thinking a train trip to Castlemaine might be in order for beers at Love Shack and a meal at Boomtown Wine (already booked for a meal at Da Noi).

Where to drink, dine and spend to help hospitality reeling from bushfires
As farmers, winemakers and brewers take stock of what’s been lost, others are rallying to make it easy for people to spend in ways that help devastated businesses across Victoria.

No turnip explorations this evening, as I'm eating out before going to the cinema. Got to love that #Melbourne has places like Johnny's Green Room; a classic Carlton rooftop.

November this year will be a big month, where I get two chances to bloody politicians' noses at the ballot box. NZ election on the 7th and VIC state election on the 28th. Bring it on, the gloves will be off. The joy of dual citizenship.
