Another social media app… Polaroid portraits of rad folks and poorly drawn sketches of folks I haven’t been able to photograph.

Tad and Peggy. Once when I was on tour in San Diego, I was asked, “Do you know Pegadeth?” And proudly, I was able to answer, “Yes I do!” Peggy played bass in Brothers of the Sonic Cloth along side Tad.

I’m a big fan of all the wildly varying music Corey has been a part of making. Bands like Triumph of Lethargy Skinned Alive to Death and Cold Lake, his solo recordings and alternative soundtracks to classic movies, it’s all fantastic.

He Whose Ox is Gored, the Great Goddamn, Haunted Horses, Filth is Eternal… Brian has played in so many rad, loud bands. And he has been so incredibly supportive of my attempts to make music. It’s really meant a lot to me.

Every neighborhood needs someone like Jesse. I live in the White Center neighborhood and when I hang out there, whether it’s going to see bands, or getting a drink or a bite to eat, there is often a connection to Jesse. I first met him when he owned Company Bar.

Josh Rhoads and his family own and operate the Southgate Roller Rink. The rink is a place for birthday parties, a place for live music, and a place where communities can come together and celebrate joy.

Has anyone written more about music in Seattle, especially all-ages music, than Megan? Through her long running column in the Stranger, as well as her time hosting the local show on Sunday nights on 107.7fm, Megan has been letting us know about cool bands for a long time.

That booming voice always lets you know when Matt Brown is around. Matt is another person I don’t remember when or where we first met. I remember knowing of him before I actually met him. I knew he co-hosted annual viewings of the Empire Strikes Back at Hattie’s Hat.

Nick Brown has excellent taste in music and all the northwest bands you wish you’d been able to go see, he probably saw several times. Brandy has known Nick for around 30 years.

Tim Hoff, bass player for Gaytheist. He might look like a mean biker dude, but I’ve always found Tim to be super friendly. I’ve been going to see his band, Gaytheist, since 2012. On stage, it’s all loud, heavy bass, off stage he’s soft spoken and all smiles.

I first met Katie when Brandy and I ran into her and her husband, Dylan, at a June of ‘44 show at the Crocodile in November of 2019. Brandy and Katie know each other from their roller derby days. Katie plays drums in a band called Bobcat.

Multi talented and all around nice guy, Darren Chase. When I met him more than a decade ago, he was playing guitar in a band called Ancient Warlocks. These days he’s creating electronic soundscapes under the name Annihilation Squares.

Larry Reid never stops championing the art and music of others. He put on punk shows at Roscoe Louie, Graven Image Gallery, and CoCA back in the day. He organized Big Black’s final show at the Georgetown Steam Plant (you can find it on YouTube). He managed the U-Men.

Bert and Michelle Ring. Bert was Brandy’s high school English teacher. Michelle is from France. They split their time between Seattle and a small town outside of Paris. Once or twice a year we get together with them for lunch or dinner and catch up. They are fantastic.

Father-son relationships are complicated, right? Family is very important to him. This was instilled in him by both his father’s Greek immigrant family, and his mother’s Mormon family.

I think it was Joel Cuplin who once called Ben “Seattle’s best friend” and I’ve always loved that description. I’ve been going out to see his bands for more than 20 years (Helms Alee, Constant Lovers, Harkonen, Roy,…).

Miki is one of the hardest working people I know. Juggling multiple restaurants, playing in bands, and advocating with the city on behalf of small businesses, she’s always making things happen. A true pillar of community.

The first time I saw one of Matt Cronk’s bands was when Qui played at the Crocodile in the fall of 2007. They were fantastic. A few years later he sent me a message asking if he could use some photos I’d taken when Qui had played at the Black Lodge.

I was introduced to Nik at the Comet in late 2009. A while later, a guy asked me if I was the Seattle Rock Guy.

I’ve been aquatinted with Jonah, or at least known who he was, for over 20 years. In that time he’s been a mainstay of the Seattle music community. Schoolyard Heroes were consistently one of the best live bands of the aughts.

Several years ago, Brandy and I were talking to Carmin at the Crocodile and when we all got beers, Carmin pulled out a bunch of koozies and offered one to each of us. I thought it was such a good idea, I now almost always bring a koozie or two with me wherever I go.

Steve Turner of Mudhoney. Mudhoney is such a great band and I feel really lucky to have seen them as often as I have. My favorite Mudhoney show is probably the time they played inside Full Tilt Ice Cream.

Sam Ford, drums and vocals in Psychic Trash. Sam is a monster drummer and a super fun person. I really enjoyed getting to know him a little bit and seeing his band play every night as we made our way down the West Coast in November of 2023.

Whenever I see Mike, I always think of the time I saw his band, Brokaw, play a show at the Comet with Monogamy Party and while Monogamy Party was playing, Mike picked up their singer and carried him around the room.

“Cool” is such a nebulous concept, but, on stage or off, Dana James is cool. I saw Helm Alee’s first show in 2007 and not long after that I stopped playing guitar and started playing bass.

The first time I saw Red Fang was February of 2006. They opened for Visqueen at the original Crocodile and it wasn’t their best set. They were plagued by equipment failures. I’ve heard they avoided Seattle for a little while after that.
