Of all the different climate pathways, which one do you think we'll take?

This was a question from a student this morning in a high school class taught by @growinwsdom.bsky.social

I have probably 100 conflicting answers to this question, but I wouldn't be in this job if I didn't still have hope.

Our part of the coast is included in that 60%. These events will become more destructive as sea level keeps rising.

Thanks to help from folks at @gmri.bsky.social , we're getting new sea level monitors in place to track sea level rise. Data is just one part of the puzzle.

Rising with the Tide: Today marks the two-year anniversary of severe storms that battered the Maine coast in January 2024. In this video, SRS Nick Record explains how #BigelowLab leapt to action, the value of regular monitoring data for ocean forecasting, and the importance of collaboration. #maine

After the US admin cancelled the $B Climate + Weather Disaster dataset, @climatecentral.org hired the scientists who ran it and set it back up.

Now the 2025 numbers are in: it's 3rd highest year on record and highest year w/o land-falling hurricanes.

Today I'm sharing one of my all time favorite books, Call Me American, by Abdi Nor Iftin, who grew up in Mogadishu, Somalia and now lives in Maine, US.

I've read it multiple times and will read it again. There's also a YA version.

A thoughtfully curated list of climate films

Thanks for this @thierryaaron.bsky.social
I've finally got around to curating a selection of films about the #climate crisis 🎥

There's lot of mediocre climate films out there, but for me these stand out head & shoulders above the rest 🎞️

They make excellent resources for classrooms, lecture halls, or community cinema's 🎬

Interesting thread about predicting vs imagining the climate future
(both facets of forecasting)
Has anyone else been dealing with some serious headline whiplash recently?

Even for those of us who follow #climate and #energy matters closely, it can be hard to know what the hell is going on!

So here's a thread to help climate communicators get a grip on how to deal with this 🧵

“We have an excellent reputation in the field, and we have a really lovely culture, so we are a highly desirable destination if you are a marine scientist,” said Bronk, of Bigelow Lab. “But we can’t counter the fear of being detained at an airport and being shipped off somewhere without due process”
President Trump’s order has had a broad impact on institutions around the country, with agencies like NASA and the NIH altering websites and eliminating requirements for inclusivity. To align with the new edict, researchers in Maine are changing the way they talk about their work.
Maine researchers adjust grant proposals, priorities to align with federal guidelines
“The minute the election happened, we started trying to change how we spoke about our work,” said Deborah Bronk, president and CEO of Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences in East Boothbay.
