What Gets Left Behind Ivy has spent the past four years in silence, swallowed in the grief of her mother’s death and the absence of her father. She’s accepted that she might just be doomed to this life until she meets Griff, the elderly man at the cemetery, who insists she go out in the world, firstly by meeting the guide at the local museum, Bear. He’s everything that Ivy isn’t: radiant, outgoing, and, of course, he talks. Excepts “The first few months it had been freeing to be invisible--to not have to be anyone at all, to exist in between. No one had expected anything of her which was a novelty to a girl who was smart and independent, to suddenly be weightless. Of course, it was freeing only until she was so weightless that there was nothing solid of her left for anyone to see.” “The first time Bear could remember someone smiling because of him was something burned onto his heart, a scab that never properly healed over. He had realized that it was perhaps the most glorious feeling to see someone smiling because of him. It had felt like a power he didn’t want to waste or misuse.”
