I've been thinking about how little our society values repair. From the way we treat everything from electronics to houses as disposable to the refusal to reckon with harms, personal or systemic, we don't seem to want to put the effort into fixing what is broken. 🧵(1/4)

I do find myself wondering whether the term "fast faith," like fast food or fast fashion, actually rather nicely captures a strain of contemporary American religion that is theologically impoverished, but rich in cultural politics and lifestyle identification.

The flip side of "I alone can fix it" is "you don't have to do anything." Democracy demands more of its adherents than authoritarianism. The appeal of a strong man is understandable when a populace is exhausted from the daily struggle of life and has nothing left for the obligations of citizenship.
