We are a coalition of eight of Canada's most well respected and impactful environmental non-government organizations, working together to ensure that Canada's marine environment is strongly and equitably protected.
As we look towards 2026, we celebrate the significant work of rights holders, communities, industry and civil society in keeping up momentum on meaningful ocean protection.

With 4 years to go and just under 15% to protect, we have all hands on deck and wind in our sails as we start this new year.

On the longest night of the year, we celebrate the turning of the tide and return of the light!

Even in the depths of winter, life beneath the ocean's surface is wide awake, from the kelp forests of the Pacific to the icy waters of the Arctic.

Happy solstice!

Good news! Endangered bottlenose whales in the Gully MPA are growing in number after decades of decline. Their friendliness toward boats made them easy targets for whaling. By the mid-2000s their population had declined to 130, but after 20 yrs of protection they're up to 210. https://bit.ly/3YiCH82

"Climate action begins in the deep. We cannot stabilise the climate without a healthy deep ocean. It has absorbed 90% of the excess heat and stored over 30% of the CO2 generated by humanity since the Industrial Revolution."

COP30 overlooked the deep ocean, protecting it must be a priority
The Maldivian government reopened gulper shark fishing, carving a species-level exemption that weakens both protections and reputations.

We welcome the Auditor General’s recognition of Canada's progress toward establishing new Marine Protected Areas & other conserved areas, many of which are close to designation.

This momentum reflects years of collaboration among governments, Indigenous partners, communities & conservation orgs.

It’s International Day of Climate Action! 🌎
Our ocean is one of the most powerful tools we have to fight climate change.

By protecting and restoring blue carbon ecosystems, we can:
🌱 Capture and store carbon naturally
🌊 Protect coastlines from erosion
🐟 Support biodiversity

Take a look in your pantry, fridge and freezer. How much do you rely on seafood for sustenance?

As we face growing challenges to food security, protecting and restoring ocean health is key to ensuring future generations can rely on the sea for nourishment.

We're happy to see the federal government recognize the serious impact of scrubber washwater, but we need a ban on scrubbers in all Canadian waters.

Grateful to @wcelaw.bsky.social & @wwfcanada.org for their work on this issue!

Every year, more than 1.5M shorebirds touch down in the inner Bay of Fundy — one of the most important stopover areas in the world.
This place is a lifeline for these tiny travellers, giving them the food and rest they need. Now, it’s finally on track for stronger protection.

White sharks are causing quite a buzz on Canada's East Coast lately!
Sharks are subject to a lot of media attention and fear-mongering, but they’re important agents of balance in the ocean ecosystems. 🦈
