It took me 40 years to find my person. Don’t give up on love; everybody deserves it. Your love quest might be a marathon or a quick sprint, but keep running. Keep seeking. Keep learning about yourself. Love is worth it. Always.

This week I gave my writing students a prompt: Write a letter to your younger self. They ran with the assignment and took it seriously. What followed was a bittersweet, honest, and poignant meditation on second chances and savoring life.

Working on my super secret cryptid book. It’s projecting some Stranger Things/X-Files vibes. #5amwritersclub

More Monsters Next Door arrived from the publisher! The anthology includes my short story “Let Them Rest.” It’s the most heartfelt thing I’ve ever written, filled with regrets, longing, and tenderness. Thank you, Critical Blast Publishing for allowing me to introduce readers to Marybeth and Larry!

There are others who will ascend past you. They’ll have fans, prestige, fame. Don’t compare yourself to them. Ask yourself: how far have you come as a writer? Fall in love with the process, with the idea of storytelling. In the end, it’s always you versus the blank page. #5amwritersclub

A government that thrives on disinformation and cruelty is like a house build on shifting sand; eventually it will topple. Fascist states may attain power through fear and violence, but they ultimately sow the seeds of their own destruction.

It’s a frozen hellscape outside, but I’ve got smoked turkey bean soup and just cracked 22,000 words on my novella, so there’s that. #Snowmageddon2026

Sometimes it takes a while for your story to manifest. You’ll have eureka moments when the details click and the story you’ve wanted to write unexpectedly shows up unannounced at 2 a.m. with a goofy grin murmuring “missed me?” #5amwritersclub

Hey, my fiction won’t change lives, but writing recommendation letters for my former students will and that’s what I’m doing now. ✍️

I know it’s just a video game, but I became sad when Pinkertons shot my horse in Red Dead Redemption 2. That’s where I am emotionally now. Getting upset over losing a fictional video game horse. RIP Big Thunder.

Sometimes you must pause your writing because reality overwhelms you. Anyway, here’s my guest post for Chapter Break on How to Write During Terrible Times.

On the first day of the new year I decided what my WIP needs is more emotional trauma and that’ll be my thing for 2026. Look out, fictitious characters. You’re in for a world of hurt.

It’s been a busy writing year. Hit some milestones, nursed some wounds, made some friends. Let’s stab 2025 in the heart with a rusty fountain pen and head straight for 2026 like a hungry wolverine in a chicken coop.

Rewatching Frank Capra’s Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. Jimmy Stewart does an impeccable job as the idealistic senator who grows disillusioned by Washington’s political machinations. I have some thoughts, but still an entertaining film.

Get to know why your writing is unique. Don’t be ashamed of your failure as a writer to connect with readers. Take failure out to dinner and a movie. Romance it. Then, write your heart out. Be brazen, not craven. You’re s writer. Act like one, dammit. #5amwritersclub

Watching others succeed while you’re floundering is frustrating. Wrestle with your inadequacies, with failure, with depression. Creativity is messy, a butcher’s fantasy drenched in pain and torment. Sit with your pain awhile. Play poker with your inner demons. #5amwritersclub
