A 2022 national research project by The Young Women’s Movement and Scottish Women’s Aid surveyed young women aged 12–25 and found that:

👉 75% knew someone who has experienced abuse in a relationship.

Is your ex threatening to share intimate photos of you?

In Scotland, it is a crime to disclose or threaten to disclose an intimate photograph or video without consent.
Offenders can face up to five years in prison and be put on the sex offenders register.

Generational attitudes can make it hard for older women who are experiencing domestic abuse to seek help. Some feel they should be able to cope quietly as “mature” women or worry they won’t be believed.

But abuse is abuse, no matter how old you are, and you deserve support.

Many older survivors have their own health issues which abusers exploit to gain control.

An abusive partner might withhold medication, threaten to damage medical equipment or use physical impairment as an excuse to isolate someone.

This can make women feel trapped.

Many women over 50 face financial barriers to leaving an abuser.

Often they have little or no independent income and may even hold savings or a pension that disqualify them from benefits or social housing.
