Academic librarian. Curious soul. As Whitman wrote, “Do I contradict myself? Very well then I contradict myself. (I am large, I contain multitudes.)”
So how many people hit the over/under on time it would take the Feds to launch an investigation of “impropriety” after the NCAA and the pro leagues embraced online gambling? (Sarcasm. There really wasn’t a line on that…right?) www.si.com/college-bask...

Unusual betting activity on NBA guard Terry Rozier’s performance in a 2023 game could be connected to a probe into college players wagering on their own teams.

Computing eats energy. While market forces currently focus on computing energy capacity by creating new electrical generation through a number of means (renaissance of nuclear? wind and solar? LNG or coal?), there may be massive gains in the energy efficiency of the computation process by using (and re-using) energy creatively. Here's an article in IEEE Spectrum about some research on reversible computing, where instead of losing energy through heat when erasing a bit, a certain fraction is recovered for use in the next computation.

Having access to a large language dataset that you can access ethically without violating license/copyright is a hurdle for many programmers and budding data explorers who want to try their hand at creating new AI tools. Language models like Meta's Llama have been trained on a dataset called the Books3 dataset, a set known to have issues with containing materials that may be under copyright or license to authors and publishers.

“I’m evangelical about the transcendent nature of music itself…We can listen to some me deeply flawed individuals create the most beautiful things imaginable. [music can] redeem the individual.” - Nick Cave, quoted by Spencer Kornhaber in an interview in this month’s @theatlantic.bsky.social

Worried that the research you are citing might be written by an AI? It’s not science fiction or dystopia, it is already happening. This complicates scholarship and fact-checking for all. Learn more at this post by Retraction Watch: retractionwatch.com/papers-and-p...
