Tempting the wrath of the whatever from high atop the thing. Introverted enneagram 5 Capricorn. Lover of books & coffee & naps.
Currently reading The Fifth Season by N.K.Jemisin. This part stood out, for obvious current comparisons to the state of things around this country.

Please explain to me why a non-elected billionaire is telling government employees what to do? I mean, I know WHY, but still… JFC 😣. The lack of basic understanding of how things work, coupled with a huge lack of humanity & empathy in a large swath of the population is concerning and unsurprising.

Book dragon. I have a book dragon. I love when things come in the mail that make me happy 😍. Right now I’m taking all the happy I can get.

Two recent books that I rec: The Naturalist Society by Carrie Vaughn and North is the Night by Emily Rath. Both very different in tone, but both with a focus on women defying the expectations of men.

This timeline is not it. It’s hard to stop repeating history if you absolutely refuse to learn it in the first place.

This line from The Buried Giant by Kazuo Ishiguro: “Is it shame that makes their memories so weak or is it fear?” Yeah, good question.

Ash and Cas sure do have a thing about bridges… and in this moment in time I can see the appeal.

Honestly, the US is sliding into oligarchy and authoritarianism, which also looks like a relationship with a toxic narcissist who keeps gaslighting you and creating problems only to turn around and "fix" them so they can go "Look at what I did for you! Why aren't you praising me for what I did?"

Finished The Familiar by Leigh Bardugo. Amazing. Luzia’s story is that of so many women. If there is ever a time to read about faith and power and curses and miracles, it might be now. This is one that’s going to stick in my brain for a while.

The car that hit a jackrabbit will have been at the body shop almost two weeks by the time I am able to pick it up (🤞). And this is for *relatively* minor damage and no issues with drivability, just plastic parts and a bumper.

Of all the times to be down a car (in for repairs due to hitting a jackrabbit on the desolate interstate at zero dark thirty in the morning), during a cold front when I don’t want to leave the apartment is as good a time as any.

To avoid unpacking after getting back from my trip, I instead put together two Target bookshelves and finished up “bookshelf wall.” I’m finding joy in the little things right now, and this wall of books makes me happy.

‘‘Tis the season of finals, when all I want to do is hide in my office and all my students want to do is suddenly get concerned about their grades.

Let’s see how much of this holiday long weekend I can spend in my pajamas, reading books, and avoiding people.

Ok, that Rosé & Bruno Mars song APT. is way too damn catchy and I may have heard it over a dozen times on repeat already. I thank whatever algo gods sent it my way. It’s the dose of fun I needed right about now.

Maybe it wasn’t the best choice to do an in-gym lifting comp after having not consistently gone to the gym in over a month. I’m alive (and it was fun), but the back is cranky today.

No reason, just thought the world could use some more cute dog photos. And this one just *had* to sit on the clean laundry and look like she was the one being inconvenienced by the situation.

I’ve been decent at compartmentalizing things (work/life/the fire pit of hell that is the upcoming US political landscape) for most of my life. This week I am realizing that I may be reaching my limit for doing so. I can feel a whole body crash coming on, just in time for the holidays. Yay.

I write a blog when not trying to teach biology to college students. Mostly about books and stuff. I’m also starting my first novel, which I’m posting chapters of. If you want to read something I’m working on: scijessreads.wordpress.com/2024/02/05/a...
