Revisiting 'Women in cancer research & oncology' 🧪⚕️

It was great to be part of this perspective - and it all still applies in 2025 - here some thoughts on how much our microenvironment matters!
Microenvironment matters During my PhD and postdoc, I have to be honest, I really didn’t think too much about gender disparity in academia. I was really fortunate to have very supportive (male) mentors and to see many successful female professors around me, especially at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). Because of those early “microenvironments,” I never thought that it wouldn’t be possible for me to advance in academia because of gender bias. Looking back now, I see I was quite idealistic, and perhaps somewhat naive! When you become a PI, your circle of peers shrinks dramatically compared to your trainee years, and for countless meetings, I was often the only woman in the room. I began to really see then the critical importance of diversity and inclusion—sadly, even to this day, I still have to point out to colleagues organizing meetings and commissions with all-male line-ups that this cannot continue. I have also come to appreciate the crucial importance of women role models; it is essential for young scientists (female and male) to see diverse examples of women who are successful while also having a full life outside of work. Again, I have been incredibly lucky that the scientific area we focus on—the tumor microenvironment—is full of female role models who have personally inspired me, including Lisa Coussens, Mina Bissell, and the late Zena Werb, and with an incredible cadre of emerging female investigators who will help lead this field in the years to come. I believe strongly that the “microenvironment matters”: that we can each have a positive effect on our scientific and academic culture at a local level, while we continue to push forward at the more challenging global level. This is the mantra that I try to put into practice in my own lab, and beyond, and I am incredibly proud of the many women, and men, I have trained who are now building and leading their own supportive microenvironments around the world.
