Great article/primer on unintended consequences of the clumsy new 'online safety legislation'. What a clusterfuck.
Sharing again, because state censorship is a major threat for open access publishing and for the right to read.
Our colleagues @simonxix.com and @kjsanders.bsky.social express some of Copim's concerns around the UK's Online Safety Act 2023, with particular consideration of how the Act creates barriers to scholar-led open access publishing (and for their readers): doi.org/10.21428/785... @copim.bsky.social

Can't repost this enough. A very misleading headline to a very clear message in the content of the article: OA is not the problem, big publishers and APCs & TAs are the problem.
Incredibly frustrating title to this article 'OA economic model branded ‘fundamentally broken’ by Jisc' what they mean (and say in the article) is TA's don't work, not OA "https://www.researchprofessionalnews.com/rr-news-uk-open-access-2025-7-open-access-economic-model-branded-fundamentally-broken/

I can't repost this enough times ❤️
Two data points:

academics at Trinity College Dublin elect its Provost (and held on to the right to do so a few years ago);

after Bath spectacularly drove out the VC in 2019, there was a review of governance and a big cut in the boss's pay: Bath is not currently threatened with mass redundancies.

It will be great when we finally democratise higher education governance and we'll look back on this strange period where people from business were given control of our universities and then ran them into the ground.

This one has been in the works a while so I'm super pleased it's finally ready to go! Opening the Future is expanding with a 3rd publisher, Michigan State University Press 🥳🎉 with books on African & Diaspora studies. Any library interested in enhancing their coll in this field, pls do get in touch!
📢We are so pleased to be able to announce the 3rd Press initiating an OtF programme! Same concept as with the other presses: libraries subscribe to a special package of books (perpetual access after 3 years) & MSUP use those fees to *only* produce new, OA frontlist books! msup.openingthefuture.net

Happening today!

@theblochian.bsky.social, Exec. Director of the Open Library of Humanities, will be speaking at today’s N8 event about the @ojcollective.bsky.social and OLH

OLH is proud to be a founding member of OJC, and to have helped inspire its scholar-led, community-owned publishing model.
Really encouraging to see today’s landmark statement from the N8 Research Partnership urging fundamental reform to academic publishing. The current system is completely unsustainable. I’ll be speaking at today’s N8 event about @ojcollective.bsky.social. www.n8research.org.uk/n8-research-... #AcaSky

This is particularly good news considering Cardiff (sadly in common with many UK HEIs) are going through a tough time financially & experiencing layoffs. I am really impressed they are still sticking their neck out to support programmes like this. Good for you Cardiff and thanks! ☺
📣 Happy to announce that @cardiffunilib.bsky.social are supporting @livunipress.bsky.social via Opening the Future! This will enable more of the Press's frontlist Hispanic & Lusophone Studies titles to be OA. We're grateful for their support. For more info 👉https://lup.openingthefuture.net/news/149/
