Fela Aníkúlápó Kútì Musical legend of soulful and energetic afrobeat. His iconic style would leave a mark on the genre and African music industry as a whole. Fela was a Pan-Africanist and left-wing political activist. Known for his heavy criticisms of colonization and Nigeria’s government and military being an extension of foreign powers. In his song “Zombie,” released in 1977, Fela criticized the methods of the Nigerian military and their actions as the agents of the ruling class, describing them as unthinking beings who only do the bidding of their masters in the form of cannibalistic violence, an endless thirst for blood they must quench. Zombie wasn’t a single song but a large political studio album; upon release, it was extremely popular among the Nigerian populous. This enraged the Nigerian government and military, and in response, the Nigerian government launched a thousand attacks against Fela’s commune, the Kalakuta Republic, severely beating Fela and throwing his elderly mother from a window, leading to her death. His home and commune were trashed and burned to the ground. In response, he delivered his mother’s coffin to the main army barrack in Lagos and wrote two songs, “Coffin for Head of State” and “Unknown Soldier.” His mother’s name was Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti. #fela #felakuti #nigeria #afrobeat #blackart

Odetta Holmes, American singer, guitarist, and civil rights activist, whose powerful voice and activism earned her the title of “The Voice of the Civil Rights Movement.” Born on December 31, 1930, in Birmingham, Alabama. She moved to Los Angeles with her mother at a young age after her parents separated. She developed a deep interest in music early on, and studied classical voice, piano, and composition. However, she would later gravitate towards folk, blues, and gospel music, which would become the foundation of her career. Odetta was deeply involved in the Civil Rights Movement, and her music was a critical tool in advancing the struggle for racial equality. She highlights the importance of effective use of creative material as propaganda. Allowing the goals of the oppressed to be disseminated and consumed by the wider masses. She performed at rallies, protests, and events organized by figures like Martin Luther King Jr., and her work often expressed themes of black pride and resistance. Odetta’s music became anthemic for the movement, and songs like “This Little Light of Mine” and “We Shall Overcome” became unofficial soundtracks to the fight for civil rights. Politically, Odetta was outspoken about black liberation. She was a vocal supporter of the Black Power movement and was aligned with leftist and socialist ideologies, particularly in the 1960s. Her positions were influenced by her belief in racial solidarity, and she advocated for unity among African Americans, as well as solidarity with other oppressed peoples around the world. Our collective liberation being tied to one another; admirable, although not ostensibly a universal working class position. While she did not explicitly promote a specific form of socialism, Odetta expressed strong anti-capitalist sentiments, believing that social and economic inequalities must be addressed through systemic change. “The revolution will not be televised, will not be televised, the revolution will be live.” Gil Scott-Heron was born on April 1, 1949, in Chicago, Illinois. Raised primarily by his grandmother in Jackson, Tennessee, Scott-Heron was exposed to literature and music from an early age. His family background and the cultural atmosphere of the time deeply influenced his creative work. He attended Lincoln University in Pennsylvania, where he studied literature and began to develop his distinctive voice in poetry and music. Known for his pieces such as “The Revolution will not be televised” “The Bottle” and “We almost lost Detroit” his work would represent a direct provocation of social inequalities and instability. For this he is often credited for pioneering the style of music known as spoken word. Pushing focus on the struggles of the working masses of the African American population and their struggle against special oppression in the United States. Specifically challenging the history of police violence as well as the stark economic realities of black communities.
