As someone here recently pointed out, this will not be a long-term problem. In a couple of years, fake citations will be easy to spot. So as a researcher, you want to be careful now, to protect your long-term reputation. So for now, don’t rely on shady sources. +
AI causes so much extra work. You have to check and double check everything.
I’m sorry, but it is disgraceful to be an academic who uses this technology to conduct research. It should be prohibited in all of our scholarly institutions, including universities and journals.

Solar is quite a solution for Australia!
Australia has so much electricity from solar power that it is going to start offering free electricity to everyone for at least three hours during the day as the wholesale price of power goes negative

Australia has so much solar that it's offering everyone free electricity
Australia's extensive solar power penetration makes so much energy that the government wants to offer free electricity at peak hours.

i finally bought a ufo looking gamer mouse, to optimize my baldur's gate experience (i've played like 4 hours so far, sad!). it turns out these things are amazing for reading pdfs. i can do all my annotations and highlights without touching the keyboard! how did I manage all these years without one?

This is part of the reason why I teach & make YouTube videos on how AI is used in science: I don't want all the baggage from genAI & chatbots to prevent the public from supporting or trusting better & more grounded forms of AI.

good artists borrow, great artists steal? i think the argument in this paper clearly points to the different functions of citing. if the author takes responsibility for the claims in the paper, no epistemic problem there. but llms screw up credit attribution, a separate question (of fairness)
Proud of this new piece 🚨 in @NatMachIntell, with S. Porsdam Mann, @JulianJKoplin & @HaotianYuan0630 - who is still in high school! ➡️ "LLMs in Scholarly Writing Pose a Provenance Problem" - when LLM's 'fill in the gaps' in your thinking with another's uncredited ideas. Preview/link ⬇️.

"In 2015, William Heydens, a M scientist, suggested that he and colleagues “ghost-write” another scientific paper. Monsanto could pay outside scientists to “edit & sign their names” to the work that he and others would do, Heydens wrote in an email. “Recall that is how we handled W K and M 2000.”"
