An ambitious cross-government strategy from the Government.

After being a crime for 10 years only 38% of UK adults correctly identify coercive control, which means we still have lots to do in implementing this into everyday practice with a powerful tool like the ABC framework.

Page 67 of 91 of the Freedom from Violence and Abuse Strategy.

Quickly scanning the VAWG Strategy and deeply disappointed that even on page 15 underneath the title Defining Violence against Women and Girls, coercive control is not included.

The title of this strategy says it all actually, Freedom from Violence and Abuse but not control.

If VAWG is a national emergency, why didn’t all 650 MPs turned up to the three-times-pushed back launch of the VAWG Strategy today?

Domestic abuse doesn’t stay at home during work hours, it follows employees into the workplace in the form of coercive control.

Employers must understand domestic abuse is a workplace issue.

Domestic abuse is everyone’s business and we all have a part to play in recognising it.

The one thing that a perpetrator says is, no one will ever believe you and the sad reality is, when someone who is experiencing coercive control and domestic abuse finds the strength and courage to report it, they aren’t being believed.

Those reporting coercive control don’t feel heard, believed or listened to by the very people who are encouraging them to speak out.

The problem is, people are reporting it but the evidence isn’t enough or they don’t fit the criteria leaving those brave enough to report it frustrated and in complete danger.

If perpetrators can convince professionals and practitioners that they are the perfect partner, then what hope has someone experiencing coercive control got in reporting the crime and being believed?

Just started reading through the VAWG Strategy 2025-2030 and one of their priority’s is trust.

One of the biggest impacts of coercive control and domestic abuse is the lack of trust.

Building up trust is a massive task and not just by the CPS but by all professionals.

These strategies always look wonderful on paper but I wonder what they will look like on reality 🤔

With regard to The UKs Violence Against Women and Girls Strategy 2025-2030

The key areas for me are:-

🟠 Survivors must be at the heart of what we do

🟠 Prevention and early prevention must be a priority

🟠 Special support for survivors is vital

Domestic abuse is about power and control, which is what coercive control is.

You don’t have to be physically hurt to experience domestic abuse.

It starts with subtle controlling behaviour; isolation, who you can and can’t speak to, movements monitored, phone controlled.

It’s easy to identify the visible signs of domestic violence, if we saw someone with a black eye or split lip, we would almost immediately start a conversation.

But we don’t know how to start a conversation about coercive control because we don’t know the early warning signs.
December 14, 2025 at 5:24 PM
Coercive control changes the behaviour of the person experiencing it almost instantly.

People won’t recognise that this is because of the perpetrator and their tactics but will automatically see the person experiencing the abuse as the problem.

Far too many men, women and young people are experiencing coercive control but in the midst of it they don’t know.

Bystanders, friends, family and colleagues don’t know what the early warning signs are or how to start conversations around coercive control.

We need to do more.

Perpetrators don’t only control their victim, but they also control the situation and professionals around them too.

Domestic abuse doesn’t start with physical violence, yet we wait until someone has physical injuries before concluding they are a victim of domestic abuse.

Domestic abuse is about power and control, which is what coercive control is.

Stating domestic abuse is a national emergency is one very small step forward.

When are we actually going to see earlier prevention work rather than waiting to put people in control rooms and specialists in various teams?
