In 2021, clean power covered Britain’s electricity demand for just 2.5 hours.
In 2025, it’s already 87 hours.

Still only 1.3% of the year – but the direction of travel is clear.

Dr Simon Evans reports
Great Britain has run on 100% clean power for record 87 hours in 2025 so far
Clean-energy sources have powered Great Britain entirely for a record 87 hours this year — a milestone toward 2030 targets

The word in energy circles is that the UK passed a significant milestone yesterday: for one hour, Britain's entire domestic electricity demand was met entirely by clean sources.

Interesting how low Electricity Demand per capita is in the UK. Guess that is related to us using gas for heating ? 🤔

Bit over the top to say the UK is relying on flywheels 🙂 but they are part of the solution in a fossil free grid 🤔

Britain's energy grid bets on flywheels to keep the lights on
Britain's energy operator is betting on an age-old technology to future-proof its grid, as the power plants that traditionally helped stabilise it are closed and replaced by renewable energy systems.
