For Messmer, the bg is brighter with warmer colors - it looks like a sunset, the particles here are red/orange-ish. There's sun rays illuminating him, making him and his red/gold/black attire glow. There's trees in the horizon, and an "eclipse" behind their heads, as if framing them.
