For context, this is a scene from a short I wrote a few days ago regarding Orpheus and his decision to become a hemitheos to end the Final Days with the absorbed power of Hydaelyn and Zodiark.

I’m normally not super comfortable with my writing, but I’m proud enough of this one to share an excerpt:
The red wash surged forward, streams like blades stabbing into Orpheus’s outstretched arm. Blood sprayed from his willing flesh, intermingling with the aether awash before him. He gasped, but held his shuddering arm as steady as he could in front of him. There was no turning back now. “NO!!” Erichthonios boomed, slamming his chains faster now against the barrier that divided them, sweat beading at his brow as its invisible form shimmered with each blow. “DON’T DO THIS!! YOU CAN’T UNDO THIS!! IT WILL CONSUME YOU!!” “Then let me be consumed!!” Orpheus shouted back to him, his teeth grit as he commanded the aether to dig into his flesh - it had no will of its own. “Let my name become like poison on your tongues! As our people are cast from Zodiark back to the star, let them revile the one who unmade their god! But let them have breath to curse me!” His veins burned, black lines spreading along his skin as the aether boiled in his blood. He knew it would be painful, but it felt unlike anything he could have prepared himself for. He wanted to scream, but to do so would draw his focus. He could not spare it. “As I rip my master from her new form, let her heart be broken as she sees what her successor has become!! Let her cry tears of sorrow and shame!! But let her have eyes to cry them!!” His resolve wavered in the pain - the physical toll it took upon him, and the thought of what the ones he loved would think. He clenched his eyes shut, recollection becoming his anchor. He thought of Hytholdaeus, swallowed by Zodiark, deprived of a lifetime to learn his worth. He thought of Themis, slowly being erased within Zodiark’s heart, who would be reduced to little else than a puppet. He thought of Eurydice… “Let the star despise me…” The barrier began to shudder, its sturdiness starting to give. … her smile on a rounded face… “… as I take the power of their gods, and ascend to the heavens…” A single crack manifested in the air. … her hair that fell in twin waves of red… “… and end that which would unmake us, and its putrid crusade!!” The crack widened, the barrier beginning to give under Erichthonios’s assault. The aether vanished into Orpheus, as his fist clenched, wrangling it into his soul with violent frenzy. … of her voice, the way she spoke to him of what she loved… how she loved her family… how she loved him… how she loved her child unborn… “Etheirys… from this day… I am your monster…” The barrier began to chip, its form starting to dissipate. Orpheus’s eyes widened, as the sweat at his brow darkened crimson, stinging his senses like knives as it burrowed below his flesh. … forgive me, my love. “… I am your meteor.” The barrier burst in a brilliant cloud of particles, sending the warden tumbling backwards. He had broken through at last…

I can barely describe how much I’ve enjoyed watching John Carpenter’s Apocalypse Trilogy. They contain such an “everyone here is unimaginably fucked” vibe that is just. IMMACULATE.

one simple trick that’s saved me a lot of time and stress is instead of answering a question with what i /think/ the answer might be, conflating theoretical points that might have nothing to do with the question, i say, “i don’t know, actually. i should check.”
