What future does AI hold? With @paulbrainey.bsky.social, we hypothesize that human-AI coevolution is leading to the emergence of a new evolutionary unit of selection. Science fiction or looming fact? Read our paper and judge for yourself. www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

What was antibiotic resistance like before we ever used antibiotics? How did we change what antibiotic resistance genes looked like over 100 years?

Our paper looking at resistance genes from a century of NCTC historical isolates now out in mGen:

Genomic resistance in historical clinical isolates increased in frequency and mobility after the age of antibiotics
Antibiotic resistance is frequently observed shortly after the clinical introduction of an antibiotic. Whether and how frequently that resistance occurred before the introduction is harder to determin...

New paper 🚨
We show how evolutionary history of predation influence AMR evolvability.

Delighted to share my first PhD paper and also the first paper from the lab !!! 🎉🔬🧬🧫
We show that predatory bacteria, M. xanthus can play an important role in the maintenance of AMR even in the absence of anthropogenic influx of antibiotics in the environment.
