It felt to me partially like a response to all the "mysterious lore" stuff that came out in the late 2000s (Lost, etc.). Yeah, you want all the weird esoteric stuff you know and have to be the key that unlocks something huge. But in reality there's only money and power.

I thought this was a gem, and loved it, but I understand why people wouldn't like it. It's a nice addition to the "idiot in LA noir" genre that also includes Inherent Vice and The Big Lebowski.
