We used to have it all: Once upon a time in NYC on Houston between 1/2 Ave there was a bar with full-on airplane decor, including tiny airplane bathroom and in seat ashtrays (*ciggies: $6/pack*), called Idlewild. I grabbed this menu in 2001 or 02.

'Where to Land' is a gift for my real Hal Hartley heads out there. Great interview in @slantmagazine.com

"I think a lot of the time people equate irony with cynicism, which I’ve never been involved with. Irony is interesting because it highlights contradiction, and that’s what I’m interested in."
Hal Hartley on 'Where to Land' and Making Movies His Own Way
Hal Hartley discusses the origins of 'Where to Land,' fundraising, drawing from his own life, and plenty more.

A/S/L is at the top of my favorite books of 2025, so I was thrilled to engage @jeannethornton.bsky.social in conversation for our friends at @publicbooks.bsky.social. A must read for my real heads and the soon to be converted alike. Thanks, Jeanne!

Doing some long overdue maintenance on my archive, I came across some photos from (I think?) 1999 seeing Wesley Willis in Denver. I will cherish his head butt forever. Rock N Roll Will Never Die!

“That’s what is so awesome about art: that we deeply flawed creatures can sometimes do extraordinary things. A.I. just doesn’t have any of that stuff going on. Ultimately, it has no limitations, so therefore can’t inhabit the true transcendent artistic experience.”
As we grow older, “loss becomes the primary condition of living,” Nick Cave says. “That doesn’t mean you’re in a hopeless, grief-stricken state all the time; it just means that you carry a deeper understanding of what it is to be human.”
Nick Cave on the Fragility of Life
The singer-songwriter believes that we are deeply flawed, impermanent creatures who can sometimes do extraordinary things.
