honored to have an AL Rookie of the Year vote along with colleague @russdorsey.bsky.social

new at Yahoo Sports, a look at our respective ballots and who snagged the final couple spots behind the obvious top three as ROY voting expanded from 3 to 5 spots this year:

Here's how our AL Rookie of the Year ballots played out as Athletics' Nick Kurtz was unanimous choice
While Kurtz's unanimous award came as no surprise, there were several other intriguing storylines among AL rookies that made the remainder of the ballot a challenge to fill out.

This offseason’s free-agent cycle has highlighted many of MLB’s economic issues. Issues that has left many free agents scratching their heads once again. The road to the next CBA is going to be … interesting. My latest for @yahoosports.bsky.social

After another limited free-agent market, MLB faces a new economic problem
If Alex Bregman and Pete Alonso can't get the deals they want, what does that mean for MLB free agency as a whole?

Couldn’t leave the Winter Meetings without one last blockbuster trade. @cespedesbbq.bsky.social and I broke down the Red Sox trade for Garrett Crochet ⬇️⬇️⬇️
the Red Sox were always the team that made the most sense to land Garrett Crochet, and they finally managed to seal a deal for the special LHP

new at @yahoosports.bsky.social with @russdorsey.bsky.social on Crochet to BOS and the huge return going back to Chicago:

With Garrett Crochet trade, Red Sox add a frontline starter and White Sox infuse their rebuild with prospects
The swap for the southpaw made sense for both sides. Here's how each team fared.

The Yankees started life without Juan Soto by adding left-hander Max Fried and bolstering their rotation. A solid start, but there’s more work to be done. My story with @cespedesbbq.bsky.social for @yahoosports.bsky.social on what’s next for the Yankees. sports.yahoo.com/yankees-begi...
Yankees begin their offseason Plan B with addition of Max Fried to their rotation. What will they do next?
Adding Fried raises New York’s floor, but Juan Soto’s departure left a massive hole in a lineup that already resembled a slice of Swiss cheese.

Contrary to popular belief, I know more than one Jordan lmao
Tough to hear @russdorsey.bsky.social say "Jordan!" in the media work room, remove my headphones to answer, only to discover he was getting @jordanshusterman.bsky.social's attention.

Betrayal.

When Steve Cohen purchased the Mets, this was the day that owners feared. The day he decided to put his money where his mouth is. $765 million to be exact. And with the Mets signing Juan Soto, the sleeping giant is now awake.

With signing of Juan Soto, Mets and owner Steve Cohen show that the sleeping giant in Queens is now fully awake
Cohen flexed his financial might in stealing Soto from the Yankees and signing him to a record contract.

The possibility of Corbin Burnes and the Giants has picked up steam over the last week. If San Francisco were to land both Burnes and Adames, Buster Posey will have made quite the first impression at his first Winter Meetings as Giants’ President of Baseball Ops.
There are many around baseball that believed Willy Adames was the second-best free agent on the market. Teams that had him as their Juan Soto Plan B are going to have to pivot. The market for guys like Teoscar Hernández, Anthony Santander, Alex Bregman and Pete Alonso are going pick up quickly.

Shohei Ohtani is one of one. And after closing a historic season with his third MVP Award to go along with the first 50-50 season in MLB History and his first World Series title, this goes down as one of the best seasons ever.

My story for @YahooSports ⬇️
sports.yahoo.com/with-2024-nl...
With 2024 NL MVP season, Shohei Ohtani outdid himself once again
In his first season as a Dodger, Ohtani surpassed even the highest expectations on his way to his first World Series title and third MVP award.

If you ask people around the game which team could really have an impactful offseason, the Boston Red Sox come up. Something that hasn’t been said in recent years. But will the Red Sox have an offseason to remember?

My column for @YahooSports sports.yahoo.com/the-boston-r...
The Boston Red Sox are primed for a big offseason. Will they land a star to pair with Rafael Devers?
The Red Sox are in the mix for Juan Soto and could also upgrade their starting rotation this winter.

I thought Luis Gil saved the NYY when Cole was out and was just really good (.opp BA lower than Skenes). Thought Cowser was best all-around rookie, solid off./elite def. Cade Smith was one of the best relievers in the game (lower ERA than Miller in 10 more innings and only 1 fewer K).
I voted for AL Rookie of the Year this season. Here was my ballot.

1st: Luis Gil (NYY)
2nd: Colton Cowser (BAL)
3rd: Cade Smith (CLE)
New York Yankees RHP Luis Gil wins the 2024 AL Rookie of the Year Award. He received 15 of the 30 first-place votes. Colton Cowser received 13 first-place votes. Mason Miller and Cade Smith each received a first-place vote.
