Pallas’s Warbler found on 4th January at Penrose estate, Loe Pool by Joe Jones. It preferred the mature tree copse behind the old chapel. This is approximately the 95th for Cornwall.

It’s #100 for 2026 as well. What a bird to mark the ton.

Ring-necked Duck at Tehidy country park:

The wintering female Ring-necked Duck seems well at home at Tehidy. Present since before Christmas and has also been seen at nearby St Gothians. Today’s sighting (2nd Jan ‘26) in bright, low winter sunshine shows off the stunning plumage.

Goosander at Boscathnoe Res, Penzance (2nd Jan ‘26). There’s approx 15 commuting the various local freshwater pools and Hayle Est.

This species seems to be on the increase but at the expense of Red-breasted Merganser. The latter is becoming quite a scarce bird in Cornwall.

Wintering Lesser Yellowlegs today at Truro River (3rd Jan ‘26). Found by Pete Maker on 15th Oct.

Nearly sixty have been recorded in Cornwall and Sept / Oct are top months to find one. Wintering is unusual. Truro river area has hosted this species on several previous occasions.

Bird of the day goes to a Red-necked Grebe off Mousehole, Cornwall. (1st Jan 26).

Found by Tim Twiggs just half a klick from where I live. My last was exactly two years ago at Helford, so not exactly common in Cornwall.

Purple Sandpiper at Marazion beach sea wall today. Slightly out of context feeding among plants on the sea defence today. They nearly always prefer the shore rocks and boulders in winter.

Cornwall hosted some classy birds in 2025. The local WhattsApp group voted Soft-plumaged Petrel as Bird of the Year, followed by Alpine Accentor and then Booted Eagle. (My choice too). What an incredible year.

If 2026 even gets close, I will be happy…

Happy Christmas everyone!

Just found a Yellow-browed Warbler and Siberian Chiffchaff together at Mousehole AFC football club (22nd Dec). Both calling frequently so not too difficult to find.

Dusky Warbler at Boscathnoe Res. Penzance today (19th Dec). An annual vagrant in Cornwall with around 70 records. Nearly all appear in late Autumn. This individual is very vocal so not too difficult to find.

Short-eared Owl Lands End (16th December) in a rare moment of perfect light. Seems like never ending rain this winter.

Ring-necked Duck, Tehidy, Cornwall.

Thanks to Sarah Talbot who found this gorgeous ♀ Ring-necked Duck (8th Dec). My 2nd for the year following a ♂ at Helston in October. Up to 2023, there were 92 county records. This species really likes the local ornamental lakes!

Garganey at Hayle Estuary today. (4th December). A rare winter visitor in Cornwall. The ten year rolling average is just 24 birds per year.

The returning adult Ring-billed Gull was also present today but the Blue-winged Teal seems to have moved on.

Curlew Sandpiper at Hayle Estuary

This bird was photo’d today (3rd Dec) from the road bridge. Luckily it was the closest wader and gave great views in perfect low winter sunshine.

Curlew Sand is a rare winter visitor to Cornwall. As far as I know, this is currently the only one atm.

A Siberian Chiffchaff is frequenting the willows on the slope down to Trenow Cove. It showed well on 30th Nov.

Noted as fairly rare winter visitor in the 2023 Annual Bird Report. Numbers have increased over the last ten years. In 2023, an exceptional 107 were recorded across 55 locations.

Lesser Scaup at Helston boating lake (23rd Nov). Present since 4th November and also the female from 5th. Both seem content here and look set to winter with the local Tufted Ducks.

Classy photos Gareth. 👍
The female blue-winged teal on the Hayle Estuary showed well today.

Blue-Winged Teal at Hayle Estuary this morning. Sadly it was always facing away. It looks like it’s settling in for the winter so should give more opportunities…

Juv Peregrine at Hayle Estuary (18th Nov). An uncommon and local winter resident and a fairly rare breeder in Cornwall.

Despite 430 miles of Cornish coastline just 19 sites were recorded in 2023, with a minimum 15 fledged young.

Blue-winged Teal at Hayle Estuary (15th Nov ‘25). Present since since the 8th Nov but really tricky to pin down. The 15th is the only day so far when the “masses” have connected. It’s Cornwall’s 27th record.
