It’s #100 for 2026 as well. What a bird to mark the ton.

The wintering female Ring-necked Duck seems well at home at Tehidy. Present since before Christmas and has also been seen at nearby St Gothians. Today’s sighting (2nd Jan ‘26) in bright, low winter sunshine shows off the stunning plumage.

This species seems to be on the increase but at the expense of Red-breasted Merganser. The latter is becoming quite a scarce bird in Cornwall.

Nearly sixty have been recorded in Cornwall and Sept / Oct are top months to find one. Wintering is unusual. Truro river area has hosted this species on several previous occasions.

Found by Tim Twiggs just half a klick from where I live. My last was exactly two years ago at Helford, so not exactly common in Cornwall.

Thanks to Sarah Talbot who found this gorgeous ♀ Ring-necked Duck (8th Dec). My 2nd for the year following a ♂ at Helston in October. Up to 2023, there were 92 county records. This species really likes the local ornamental lakes!

The returning adult Ring-billed Gull was also present today but the Blue-winged Teal seems to have moved on.

This bird was photo’d today (3rd Dec) from the road bridge. Luckily it was the closest wader and gave great views in perfect low winter sunshine.
Curlew Sand is a rare winter visitor to Cornwall. As far as I know, this is currently the only one atm.

Despite 430 miles of Cornish coastline just 19 sites were recorded in 2023, with a minimum 15 fledged young.
