The popular Steppe Grey Shrike has relocated to coastal fields a few hundred m north of Gunwalloe Marsh. It gave fabulous views this morning (30th October) in the field adjacent to Pedn Gwinian lay-by. This is the second record for Cornwall and approx 30th for the UK.

Bit of excitement on the CEFAS Endeavour this morning when we saw this Fea's-type Petrel 17nm off the Cornish coast as we were heading towards Lundy to shelter for the next day or so.

Steppe Grey Shrike (pallidirostris) showed well today (21st Oct ‘25) at Mullion Cove. After yesterday’s no-show, it decided to perch up in full view today. Last sighting in Cornwall was Apr 92 at C. Cornwall. Got to say, it’s a classy looking grey shrike.

What a stunning find. Only the 2nd record for Cornwall. First was in 1992. Sadly it could not be relocated this morning. Strong westerly winds and rain didn’t help.
I now know that the stunning bird we saw on Mullion Cliff, Cornwall yesterday is a Steppe Grey Shrike (Lanius excubitor ssp. pallidirostris) as confirmed by @cbwps.org.uk and other helpful birders - thanks folks! 🙏

Thanks Martine. Wow! It looks like a Steppe Grey Shrike!
Walking a bit of the coast path on Mullion Cliff, Cornwall this afternoon spotted this stunning Shrike. Checking the ID I think it may be a first winter Lesser Grey Shrike but I’m not certain. Any thoughts birders? @runnelstone.bsky.social @cbwps.org.uk #birds

Baird’s Sandpiper at Colliford Res, Bodmin Moor, 18th Oct ‘25. Present since 13th October. There’s over 40 Cornwall records but Baird’s is far from annual. It’s my 20th for Cornwall but I’ve never seen one Stateside, in eight visits!

Lesser Yellowlegs this morning at Truro River (17th Oct ‘25). Found by Pete Maker on 15th. Nearly sixty have been recorded in Cornwall and Sept / Oct are top months to find one. The Truro river wider area has hosted this species on several previous occasions.

Classic seawatching at St Ives, Cornwall yesterday 1000s of birds including Gannets, Sooty Shearwater, Bonxie, Grey Phalarope, Storm and Leach's Petrels, Arctic and Long-tailed Skuas and Sabine's Gull thanks to the locals for giving directions on the birds before they disappeared around the corner

The Red-necked Phalarope at St. Gothians, Gwithian finally departed on the 6th October after ten days on site. Scores of birders took the rare opportunity to see it.

I managed to see all three phalaropes in four days with a visit to Scilly as well.

Can’t beat St. Ives for close views. Great pics Gareth.

Great sea watch from St Ives on Saturday with great views of at least 6 first-cycle long-tailed skuas.

Long-tailed Skua montage pics from Pendeen, 5th Oct. At least nine were seen from St. Ives and Pendeen over the 4th & 5th Oct (Storm Amy). It’s been a bumper year for the species with numbers way above the county rolling average. Good luck to the county recorder assessing them all!
