Beyond disgusting…
The U.S. Embassy in Denmark removed 44 Danish flags honoring Danish soldiers killed in Afghanistan outside the building, drawing outrage from the country’s veterans amid heightened tensions between Copenhagen and Washington.

Removal of flags for fallen Danish soldiers at U.S. Embassy sparks backlash
There was no malicious intent in removing the flags, said a State Department spokesperson, who added that the flags had been replaced.

What a wrenching development: forced to agree with Rand Paul about something.
#ProudBlue

Who would have ever thought that I would agree with Rand Paul— yet I do.

It certainly would have been an Act of War!
RAND PAUL: If a country bombed our air defense missiles, captured & removed our president, & blockaded our country, would that be considered an act of war?

RUBIO: We just don't believe this operation comes anywhere close to the constitutional definition

PAUL: Of course it would be an act of war!

WTF? He’s dissing the 2nd amendment…
Trump: "With that being said, you can't have guns. You can't walk in with guns. You just can't. You can't walk in with guns. You can't do that. But it's just a very unfortunate incident."

John Cornyn is all over my youtube channels trying to drum up support by fomenting Islamophobia and general hysteria about the nonexistent threat of sharia law in the US.

Sweet potato fries are the George Harrison of fries.

Thank you.

I subscribe to 5 anti-Trump youtube channelss. Interestingly, I see many ads for James Talarico to be Senator from Texas. Otherwise it’s beaucoup ads for Republicans running for state office. Given the likely audience for these channels, why is the GOP spending money for ad buys there?

So Bovino’s out? I will be surprised if it makes a substantial difference in how border patrol & customs enforcement is run…

Re-watching Brokenwood Mysteries. The detectives’ characters are so refreshingly sane, despite occasional eccentricity.

@languagedoodad.bsky.social Any thoughts about how analog ai will bear on llms or language translation? Or not an issue?

Watched a light-hearted youtube video about separatist movements in Europe. There’s 118 of them of varying degrees of seriousness. As Lenin or some Dutch Reform theologian said, “You can’t split rotten wood”-a dictim the Hungarians in particular have taken to heart. Whew!

I’ve always enjoyed the Asterid TV series on PBS, but it seems like the writers have really caught fire in season 5. Hope it’s not the last season, but I do sense it’s winding toward a finale…

Jamelle Bouie has a take that the Trump Administration may be secretly hoping that when ICE bursts into a house for an illegal arrest that somebody will shoot and kill the ICE officer. Despite the illegal arrest attempt, they hope to spin it for political advantage.

Mike Johnson accuses Norway of “making a political decision & not awarding the Nobel Prize to probably the most deserving individual in history of the prize. There are 8 to 10 wars & conflicts that’ve been resolved by President Trump, & he got snubbed.”

Trump is saying he won’t use force to take Greenland. The world shouldn’t believe him. Not only because it’s possible he’s lying, but because also he may not know what he might do—and we don’t either.

World leaders at Davos should know:

Trying to figure Trump out is a waste of time. He’s a bully for its own sake. Otherwise he’s full of shit.

Hmm…I’m getting hints on youtube that China’s *analog* approach to building computers is going to catch fire. That’s interesting. Not that I necessarily like the idea, but it seems to me that analog computers might have the possibility of allowing for real consciousness.

As a retiree, I enjoy week days rather more than I used to do. Weekends are by comparison a bit more stale. I find I do tend to enjoy Sundays a tad more than Saturdays b/c, it seems to me, more bad news about Trump’s prospects seems to come out…

Reportedly in his fundraising pitch, Trump asks for donations to sustain the “maga movement.” I wonder if the rank-and-file Trump supporters actually think of themselves as a movement—rather than as “just folks.”But I guess they might find “maga movement” as a vaguely flattering descriptor.

Apparently to get a sound out of my $40 erhu, I need a special soft rosin. I have ordered such from Singapore. Then maybe I can at least play the open string A and D. I honestly believe this will happen.

I note that the news videos put out by the Times of India seems to have a subtle but consistent pro Russia slant. That often takes the form of dwelling on the putative military difficulties of Ukraine and the supposed power of Russian military might.
