This shortpacked comic came out in 2007. As the comic explains, with the shifting timeline, Bruce's childhood essentially changes to reflect the time.

Well, Dave Willis saw the future, because in Batman was reading Manga when he was in HS

And - NOTHING. They didn't even print a WU Rare
Here are the Hybrid cards I'm considering replacing in my Cube. Hopefully, something decent comes out in Lorwyn.

Worldpurge and Elemental Expressionist are the ones I'm hoping I can replace with something better.

Funnily enough, even though it doesn't mesh with Batman Year One, I think Year Zero could fit in with The Long Halloween.

Year Zero has The Red Hood Gang and Cobblepot before he became the Penguin, and Dr. Pamela Isley. Then in TLH, they're already established Supervillains, including The RIddler.

Again, overall not bad, but it just makes me think - Maybe Batman has outgrown The Riddler? Or maybe Riddler is someone that only works as an early Batman villain.

In someways, Riddler is like a diet coke version of the Joker. They both insane, but Riddler isn't nearly as chaotic.
January 10, 2026 at 1:14 AM
and Riddler challenges him to solve his 12 riddles. Batman does 3 before he just punches him in the face, and wins.

Twelve issues, three riddles. Feels anemic for the Riddler.

So, Riddler is hardly in parts 1/2, but in part 3, he has an interesting set up. He's set himself up like the Sphinx, and he's holding the city hostage, to see if anyone can stump him with a riddle. It's a good example of how INSANE the Riddler is.

The final confrontation, he has Batman trapped...

I know it's a story, but by making it SIX MONTHS, I can't stop myself from asking these questions. Two or three months would be more believable.

Instead of spending the issues with Doctor Death, I'd have liked to see the gangs forming a Black Market to get stuff to people.
January 10, 2026 at 12:31 AM
How?
Okay, Snyder does kind of try to explain it - he cut the power to the city, and has balloons full of poison in the air that will explode if they see the police or the army show up, but, seriously... how?

How is he eating? Who is washing his suit? What about all the garbage?
January 10, 2026 at 12:31 AM
Here's the summary, Riddler is in the beginning in the background, where it's ultimately revealed that he's behind the Red Hood Gang.

Then, Riddler disappears while Doctor Death is going around. Then it's six months later and Riddler has taken over Gotham.

hardly a Riddler story.

If this is the BEST Riddler story, maybe Riddler's a shitty character and we should give up on trying to write stories about him.

I really appreciate what Scott Snyder tried, tho.
January 10, 2026 at 12:31 AM
Year Zero has 3 parts. The beginning with the Red Hood Gang, a middle with a villain called Doctor Death, and the final part with The Riddler.

Which reminds me - is this the best Riddler story?

I don't know. Because I haven't read that many Riddler stories, but sometimes it feels like...

it plays with that. Scott uses the stuff he established, and it has a bit of the horror aesthetic that permeates his run.

Overall, it's pretty good, but maybe it's too LONG compared to how succinct Year One is.
January 10, 2026 at 12:09 AM
Batman Year One doesn't worry about continuity, because it is planting itself on new ground, so to speak. Since it's at the beginning, there's essentially no continuity to speak of.

Year Zero, on the other hand, is very entrenched in continuity. It is part of Scott Snyder's run and...

Gordon's first son was born at the end of Batman Year One, meanwhile, in Year Zero, baby James was born when Bruce was 8 years old.

Second, Year One is still BETTER because of how simple it is. Frank Miller really wanted to pair down Batman to his essentials, so Year One is very approachable.
January 10, 2026 at 12:09 AM
The answer is --- No, on both fronts. lol

There is one big detail that contradicts the two, and it has to do with Jim Gordon.

In Batman Year One, Gordon had barely transfered to Gotham right before Batman first appeared. But in Year Zero, Gordon was at the GCPD since Bruce was 8. In addition...

So, @salazarknight.bsky.social called Batman Year Zero the BEST Riddler story, and that had me intrigued. I couldn't help wondering if (somehow)Year Zero and Year One could actually co-exist, and could Year Zero (maybe) be better than Year One?
