An early lesson in politics came when Michael Heseltine was on TV talking about Westland Helicopters in Yeovil. I was in Yeovil as a child and I noticed, "he's talking about us". That's how I learned that politics shapes everything. /End.

Because of my father being in the RAF I went to boarding school in Somerset at the age of 10 and so did my older brother and sister.

My parents went on to Wales and then Canada. I stayed at boarding school until the age of 18. And that is how my life has been shaped by European politics... 3/

I learned only a few German words because it was all English-speaking. Britain was a far-away place that I knew only as a voice on the radio. Returning at age 7 to Yeovil in Somerset, I was a British immigrant in England. To me, the language was the same, but everything else was different... 2/

My story? Alright then - the first thing I well remember was the Queen's Silver Jubilee 1977 in the village of Elmpt in Germany. My father was flying at RAF Bruggen and handling nuclear bombs that could have been dropped on Poland. I was too young to know what RAF Bruggen was for... 1/
