Greetings Rotarians, Today is our last regular meeting of the year at noon at United Church. Kim Broyles, head coach of the Secret City E-Sports Team will be speaking. In 2019, Los Alamos High School was one of the first schools to set up a competitive team in New Mexico. They are consistently one of the top teams in the state.

Greetings Rotarians and Friends, There will be no meeting this week. We will have our last meeting of the year next week, Dec 2 noon at United Church. Happy Veterans Day Rotarians and Friends, Today, we honor those who most embody the spirit of "Service Above Self". Rotary has a long and meaningful history of supporting military service members, veterans, and their families. Many early Rotarians served in the military or supported wartime relief, organizing drives for Red Cross supplies, war bonds, and medical aid. Rotary clubs also helped returning soldiers reintegrate into civilian life through job placement and education.

Greetings Rotarians and Friends, I wanted to share a message from fellow Rotarians attending the COP30 Conference in Brazil next week. Please consider supporting their efforts. If you want to pool resources to collectively support them as a club, please let me know ASAP. I hope this message finds you in good health and high spirits. Across the world, Rotarians have always stood where compassion meets action, bringing clean water for a village, providing polio vaccines for children, doing reforestation projects, building peace one friendship at a time.

We have some business to discuss—Meals of Hope is a less than a month away!—but mostly it's just an opportunity to relax, enjoy some fine food and catch up with each other. Greeting Rotarians, Megan Jackson is the Program Specialist for Big Brothers Big Sisters of New Mexico here in Los Alamos. BBBSNM creates lasting one-on-one mentoring matches between caring adults and local youth—because being Big means so much when you’re little. Megan works to connect volunteers with children who share their interests, whether it’s art, sports, or science. There are 29 active matches in Los Alamos and more youth waiting for mentors.

Greetings Rotarians & Friends, Our speaker this week is Los Alamos County Airport Manager Gary Stoddard. His career path began with a B.A. in Cultural Anthropology in 1998, after which he worked as an architectural designer and builder in Oakland, CA. In 2014, he earned a master’s degree in systems engineering from Iowa State University’s Industrial Engineering Department and joined Los Alamos National Laboratory as a building automation controls engineer.

Greeting Rotarians and Friends, Today, our guest speaker is Brandi Engeman, Executive Director of Los Alamos Arts Council (LAAC). Since its founding in 1967, LAAC has served as a catalyst for civic engagement through arts and culture. It operates the Fuller Lodge Art Center, providing gallery space, exhibition opportunities, a gallery shop, studio classes, and community programming. Through art fairs, daytime performance series, the Pajarito Literary Festival, and seasonal events like Pumpkin Glow and the Kite Festival, LAAC fosters cultural participation for all ages.

Greetings Rotarians & Friends, One of the most powerful ways Rotary changes lives is through our youth scholarships and exchange programs. By opening doors to education and global experiences, we give young people the chance to grow as leaders, explore new cultures, and build friendships that span the world. These opportunities plant seeds of understanding and peace that ripple out to strengthen entire communities.

Our guest speaker this week will be Jessica Martinez, Director of Policy and Coalition Building at the New Mexico Immigration Center. Jessica works to shape state-level immigration policy, strengthen community coalitions, and advocate for the rights and well-being of immigrant families. Her talk will explore current immigration challenges in New Mexico, how policy impacts local communities, and the role of coalition-building in driving meaningful change.

First, I attended the District Assembly last Saturday where I learned a few things about club management. As people of action, we are called to support our fellow New Mexicans in their time of need. Earlier this week, the village of Ruidoso was devastated by a sudden flash flood triggered by intense monsoon rains over recent wildfire burn scars. The Rio Ruidoso rose more than 20 feet in a matter of minutes, destroying homes, displacing families, and tragically claiming several lives.
