Delighted to receive the new biography of Anna Atkins by Corey Keller. It's a fascinating study of Anna’s life and work within the wider context of women’s 19th century lives.
Highly recommended read and, of course, stunning illustrations.

At the home of photography #Lacock Abbey with the amazing Jo Gane re-creating a Photogenic Drawing taken by Constance Talbot in May 1839.
Over 3 hours to register an image in sunny weather! This project will feature in my talk for Photo Oxford 2025. Photo by Andy Cochrane.

Returning to former posts, this week features early English photographer Miss Jane Halksworth and the origins of a photographic dynasty. In 1857 she advertised her portrait service from the family home in Shepherds Bush and also from her father's watchmaking premises at 58 Fleet Street, London. 1/3

Continuing the focus on Mrs Atkinson, travelling photographer in 1860, by August she reached Northallerton in North Yorkshire. The Stockton Herald advertised 'Atkinson’s Photographic Van' centrally located near the church, offering large & small portraits 'taken by a Female'. 1/2

This week introduces one of the least visible of all early British women photographers but possibly one of the most significant. Mrs Atkinson was an itinerant photographer travelling with her 'Photographic Van' in her 1860 Richmond and Ripon Chronicle advertisement. 1/2

Kingston upon Hull was the location for a third early woman photographer, Mrs Hannah Hardey. Her primary occupation had been as portrait painter in oils, but in 1857 she branched out into photographic portraiture located at her husband’s studio on Jarratt Street. 1/2

Continuing our focus on early women photographers in Kingston upon Hull, today looks at another widow, Mrs Mary Overend. Near Ann Cooke’s former studio, Mrs Overend appeared in trade directories at Saville Street from 1861-1867 & described as 'Artist Photo' in the 1861 census.

This week looks at the city of Kingston upon Hull and its pioneering women photographers. Widow Mrs Ann Cooke took over the photographic studio of Edward Holmes on George Street in 1845. She became the first woman to appear in a census as a Photographic Artist in 1851. 1/2
