🪶 Today we remember Chief Dreaver, his family’s generations of service, and all Indigenous Veterans who have contributed to our collective peace and healing.

Joseph Dreaver | Veterans Affairs Canada
A proud family Joseph was born on 2 June 1891 in what is now known as Mistawasis Nêhiyawak, a Cree First Nation in central Saskatchewan. He was the grandson of Chief Mistawasis, an important leader of the Plains Cree. Chief Mistawasis signed Treaty 6 with the British Crown in 1876. Joseph’s father, George Dreaver, was also chief of his First Nation for decades.

His story reflects the strength of countless First Nations Veterans who overcame barriers and prejudice to serve Canada — only to return home to unequal treatment. Their service reminds us of the resilience and spirit of Indigenous peoples who continue to protect their communities.

Chief Dreaver served with courage and integrity, earning the Military Medal for bravery during the First World War. Despite facing deep discrimination after returning home, he continued to lead with strength — serving as Chief of Mistawasis Nêhiyawak.

Mental health is not a privilege—it’s a human right. Healing requires justice, land restoration, and respect for treaties. Together, let’s unmask mental health, uplift Indigenous voices, and build systems of care rooted in compassion, culture, and justice.

We believe healing is cultural, relational, and collective. Indigenous knowledge reminds us that strength grows from connection: to land and ancestors. The wildfires across Canada have displaced thousands, devastating Indigenous homelands. These are mental health emergencies.
