Initially, humility feels like war.

Until it becomes a white flag.

And then you begin to see that it’s how you become who you were created to be.

Accepting what we can’t change is one of the ways the Lord changes us.

But it’s ok to—

Grieve what was
Grieve what never was

And hope for the good that can only come because there was any grief to begin with.

Whatever your thoughts as they relate to K. Lamar’s music, something emerged on Sun night that we seldom see at halftime:

Art

In all of its beauty, mystery, & messaging, Lamar created something that demanded interpretation & explanation.

A rare exception.

A few things preachers might neglect to pray before they preach:

-Heartbrokenness: being deeply aware of your people’s humanity

-Discernment: being sensitive to the mood of the text and the mood of the room

-Approachability: being a pastor that people feel seen and known by

I hope it becomes a balm to many souls who could use a few words every day to be reminded of the Lord’s nearness.

Never let a moment go by that you don’t pause and wonder about the ways God may be working.

You may not know, but you will be reminded anew that you are known.

Gratitude is—

An imaginative act
A creative expression
A collaborative experience

It’s how we say “wow!” and “no way!” to God.

When life doesn’t turn out the way you hoped.

Some thoughts—

-It is good to acknowledge the dreams that never came true

-It is good to grieve all that never was

-It is good to be sad about things that were lost

Also….

It is good to let gratitude have a place.

Happy Anniversary to the lovely Melissa Martin!

What a privilege and joy to be your husband all these years! The Lord has been so kind and gracious to us, I almost can’t believe it.

Here’s to 30 more.

Love you forever.

Early morning journey to Ohio where I’ll be speaking to @sendnetwork pastors and spending time with Harbor Network leaders in the Cleveland area.

It’s -1 degrees, but the horizon looks pink and warm, so I’m just going to pretend I live in the south today.

I want to start talking about it now—

I have a new book coming out this fall called “In the Morning You Hear My Voice.”

What is it?

365 poetic prayers & reflections.

This has been years in the making, so thx to @BHpub for their support of this very artistic & abstract work!

I am not one to get excited about commentaries, but this one caught my fancy somehow.

My sermon for tomorrow is titled “An Invitation To Rest” from Genesis 2:1-3.

Practicing sabbath rest is not simply “not doing anything.”

It’s about taking a day to entrust the things we do to the Lord so that they don’t undo us.

I’d say that’s doing quite a bit.

The love and forgiveness of Christ means

1. You can begin again
2. You can be whole again
3. You can trust again
4. You can be hopeful again

Christ has made all the good “agains” possible.

Somewhere
In the humble town of Bethlehem
Men and women toiled
Children laughed and cried
The soil produced its sustenance
And the earth spun on its axis

While another man and woman
Of no earthly means

Held the meaning of life in their hands
